"said the Moon"and my 1338 beams caused the dark pines to throw long shadows upon
the rocks
I looked at the pictures of StChristopher carrying the Infant Jesus that are painted there upon the walls of the housescolossal figures reaching from the ground to the roofStFlorian was represented pouring water on the burning houseand the Lord hung bleeding on the great cross by the waysideTo the present gener- ation these are old picturesbut I saw when they were put upand marked how one followed the otherOn the brow of the mountain yonder is perchedlike a swallow 's nesta lonely convent of nunsTwo of the sisters stood up in the tower tolling the bellthey were both young and the therefore their glances flew over the mountain out into the worldA travelling coach passed by belowthe
postilion wound his horn
and the poor nuns looked after the carriage for a moment with a mournful glanceand a tear gleamed in the eyes of the younger oneAnd the horn sounded faintly and more faintand the convent bell drowned its expiring echoes"
