INTRODUCTION
A General Picture of the University Xiamen University was founded in 1921 by TanKahKee, a well-known patriotic overseas Chinese leader known as “The Henry Ford of Asia.”
It was the first university in China founded by an overseas Chinese. At present it is the only key comprehensive university directly affiliated
with the Education Ministry in any of the five special economic zones and is one of China’s higher-level universities designated for the state key
construction of the “211 Project” and the “985 Project”.
Over the past 85 years, Xiamen University has accumulated rich experience in offering its educational programs and has presented its distinctive
features in running the programs. Equipped with a strong team offaculty and staff, Xiamen University, which provides a fairly complete range
of programs of education, has become a first-class comprehensive university in China with extensive international influence.Xiamen University

Human Resources Development Since its foundation, Xiamen University has produced more than 140,000 undergraduates and graduates for the country, many of whom have become outstanding figures in different fields. And over 50 academicians of the Chinese Academy of Sciences (CAS) and the Chinese Academy of Engineering (CAE) have studied or worked at Xiamen University.
The university now has a total enrollment of over 30000 full-times tudents, including 18989 undergraduates,10591 master students, 1810 doctoral students, and over 1200 international students and students from HongKong, Macao and Taiwan. Inaddition, Xiamen University has more than 6000 overseas correspondence students.
Xiamen University implements an all-around education and attaches great importance to cultivating studentinnovation and creativity. Its students have won the gold medal for four consecutive years in the China Undergraduate Challenge Cup for Business Plan Competition, and in 2003 landed the unique Special Prize in China UndergraduatesContest for Mathematical Modeling.
In late 2005, Xiamen University received a straight-A score in the undergraduate level Teaching Appraisalorganized by the Ministry of Education.
Graduates from Xiamen University show strong capability in the keen competition for jobs and the annual employment rate exceeds 97%, ranking at the top among Chinese universities.
Scientific Research and Result Transfer In recent years, Xiamen University has insisted on aiming for the cutting-edge of international scientific research and those are as of high demand to the country. It takes advantage of its strong potentiality in foundational research and actively develops applied foundational research and applied research. Its ability to do research in cutting-edge scientific field and to take on significant research projects has improved to a great extent. It also contributes greatly to economic construction and social development on both a local and national scope.Prominent achievements have also been made in scientific research, result transfer, and industrialization.
In the past five years, Xiamen University has carried out 742 research projects, applied for 228 patents, and received 91 patents. In 2004 and 2005, three articles were published in Science and Nature. 46 researchprizes at both provincial and state level were issued, including a Second Prize in the State Scientific and TechnologyProgress Prize. The university continues to evidence its renowned strength in humanities and social sciences;99 projects at the state-level social sciences foundation program have been implemented, with 22 projects in2003 and 28 in 2004, ranking Xiamen University as No.3 among all institutes of high education in the nation.
Prominent achievements have been made in independent scientific research innovation and transfer of scientific research results, such as the first speedy diagnosis reagent box for a vaccine against hepatitis C Type5 and the bird flu virus H5N1, and the industrialization of the scientific research result N-(2)-L-alanyl-L-glutamine. In 2005, the Science Park of Xiamen University was recognized as a state university science park by the Ministry of Science and Technology and the Ministry of Education.

In recent years, the university has sent scholars or teachers abroad on hundreds of occasions for cooperative
research, further study, and to attend academic conferences each year, and has also sent out exchange students to sister universities around the world. Since 2000, it has welcomed over 2000 foreign teachers and experts for teaching, delivering lectures, or conducting research, has successfully hosted over 50 international and regional academic conferences, and has carried out over 60 international joint research programs.
Xiamen University is located on the west bank of the Taiwan Strait, and is in the forefront of cultural exchangeswith Taiwan because of its especially favorable geographical location and advantageous human resources.It is one of the Mainland Chinese universities most actively engaged in cross-straits educational, scientific and cultural exchanges.
