Top 10 popular Chinese dishes among foreigners

Chinese food is famous for its colors, aromatic flavors and the variety of its regional cuisines and ingredients. The following top ten dishes are each unique in their own way with exquisite flavors, wonderful presentations and deep cultural meanings.

1. Sweet and Sour Pork 糖醋里脊


Sweet and Sour Pork is a Chinese dish that is particularly popular in Cantonese cuisine. The dish is now popular all over the world. With its great look and taste, Sweet and Sour Pork takes the cake among foreigners’ favorite Chinese dishes.


2. Kung Pao (Gong Bao) Chicken 宫保鸡丁


Kung Pao Chicken is the most famous dish of Guizhou cuisine. It is popular among both Chinese and foreigners. Ask a foreigner to name some of Chinese dishes, Kung Pao Chicken will be one of them.


3.  Spring Rolls 春卷


Spring rolls are an appetizer, eaten either fresh or fried.They are usually eaten during the Spring Festival in China, hence the name. A spring roll is made with a round, thin dough sheet with fillings rolled inside and deep fried in oil.


4. Egg-fried rice 蛋炒饭


Egg-fried rice is one of the most ordered dishes at Chinese takeaways and restaurants around the World. It is usually eaten as a side dish, to compliment Chinese meals such as curries, stir-fries or sweet and sour dishes.


5.Spicy Tofu (Mapo doufu) 麻婆豆腐


Mapo Doufu is a popular Chinese dish which is said to be originated from the Sichuan Province. It is a combination of tofu (bean curd) and minced meat, usually pork or beef, in a spicy chili- and bean-based sauce, typically a thin, oily, and bright red suspension.  The dish features the trademark “hot” spiciness along with the characteristically tongue-numbing nature of Sichuan’s flavorful food.


6. Dumplings 饺子


China has been perfecting the art of dumpling making since the Song dynasty. Chinese dumplings may be round or crescent-shaped, boiled or pan-fried. The filling may be sweet or savory; vegetarian or filled with meat and vegetables. It is one of the most popular traditional foods in China and extremely popular in Western countries.


7. Won Ton Soup 馄饨


This is one of the most popular soups in street food stalls throughout southern China.  The most versatile shape for won tons is a simple right triangle. Made by folding the won ton in half and pulling together to two opposite corners. Won tons are usually boiled and served in soup.


8. Peking Duck 北京烤鸭


With a history of more than 600 years, Peking roast duck is the most famous gourmet cuisine of Beijing and one of the most popular foods in China. It has also received worldwide recognition for its tempting shining color, crispy skin and tender meat.


9.  Chow Mein 炒面


In China, chow mein is made with soft noodles. For crispy chow mein noodles, add more oil than the recipe calls for and cook the noodles longer to dry them out.


10. Fried Shrimps with Cashews 腰果虾仁


Compared with the heavy tastes of Spicy Tofu, this dish is relatively light. Known for being nutritious, good-looking and tasty. Fried Shrimp and Cashews is said to protect the cardio-cerebral-vascular system and prevent cardiovascular disease. The shrimp is usually soft and easily digestible and accented by the cashews.
