A month in China made me realize that my wallet is too small, because I need to bring a lot of cash with me. Some places, especially many small stores don’t accept cards. In addition, I noticed that Chinese people prefer to pay cash if the total amount is a relatively small number. However, this is the opposite in the US. Americans rarely bring cash with them or bring a small amount, because pretty much every store, no matter how small, accepts cards. Even if Americans are only purchasing a bottle of water worth a dollar, they would still choose to use their cards rather than paying cash. The only times that Americans would choose to pay with cash are: 1) tipping, and 2) paying toll fees. The main advantage of bringing only cards in your wallet is that even if your wallet gets stolen, you can quickly alert the bank to suspend the stolen card, and no asset would be loss.
