A)阅读下列短文,从每题所给的四个选项(A、B、C和D)中,选出最佳选项。

(A)

The plane turned slowly and she looked down at the collection of dolls(玩偶)houses and duck ponds.

The“No Smoking”sign flashed on. People fastened their seatbelts, packed away paperbacks(平装本)and magazines, and above the roar(隆隆声)of the engines conversation seemed to hum(嗡嗡叫)and ripple.

Juana looked down through the cabin window again at the toy town, wondering what it would be like to really live there for six whole weeks.

She'd read about England,of course. Everybody had read about it at school. She knew, for example,it was a constitutional(宪法的)monarchy;that London was the capital with about six million people living in it;that the currency was the pound sterling(英国货币),the main agricultural products are dairy(乳品)farming, livestock(牲畜)and fishing—and that her mother wanted her to bring home a lambswool sweater and some jars of marmalade(果酱).

But none of that made it seem any more touchable, and she trembled suddenly—a sick feeling, that had nothing to do with the plane's dropping height, was grasping hold of her.

She'd been away from home before,of course.Last summer she'd spent a fortnight in Mallorca with Katerine. And the summer before that, when she was only fourteen, she and Dolores Camino had actually been allowed to go on a school trip to Madrid.

But that was different.Katerine and Dolores were friends. She'd known them and their families all her life. They talked the same language and understood the same jokes. In the spring holidays she and Dolores had even fallen in love with the same boy.

In England,in London, there would only be Sandie to talk to—whom she'd written to,but never met.

The sick feeling turned to near panic(恐慌).

She'd boasted such a lot about the English trip and told everybody how she'd think of them doing the same old boring summer things while she was busy shopping in King's Road and waving to Prince Charles.

Now it was all here and happening, and as the Iberia plane touched down and began to roll along the runway she took a deep breath and whispered:“Good luck!”

21.What did Juana do when the“No Smoking”sign came on?

A.She put her things away, ready for landing.

B.She continued looking out of the window and thought about her holiday.

C.She continued her conversation, despite(不管)the roar ofthe engines.

D.She continued looking at some little toys she had brought with her.

22.How did Juana feel about going to stay in England?

A.She was confident because she knew so much about England.

B.She was worried about the things she had to buy for her mother.

C.She didn't feel prepared for it,even though she had studied about it.

D.She had no strong feelings;she only felt unwell because of the movement of the plane.

23.What does the passage tell you about Juana's holidays before this one?

A.She had been on holiday twice before without her parents.

B.She had been to England before.

C.She had had several holidays at her friends'houses.

D.She had been to Mallorca when she was fourteen.

24.What was Juana's relationship like with her friends?

A.She had three close friends:Katerine,Dolores and Sandie.

B.She was a close friend of Katerine's and Dolores'while Sandie was only a pen friend.

C.She was notas close to Katerine and Dolores as they were to each other.

D.Of all her friends,Sandie was the only one she could talk to.

25.Before leaving, what had Juana told her friends?

A.That she would miss them while she was in England.

B.That she would be envious(羡慕的) of them while she had to do boring things like shopping.

C.That she would remember to buy presents for them and even to say hello to Prince Charles for them.

D.That she would think about how interesting her holiday was compared to theirs.

(B)

We are all interested in equality, but while some people try to protect the school and examination system in the name of equality, others, still in the name of equality, want only to destroy it.

Any society which is interested in equality of opportunity and standards(标准;水平)of achievement must regularly test its pupils. The standards may be changed—no examination is perfect—but to have no external(外部的)tests or examinations would mean the end of equality and of standards. There are groups of people who oppose this view and who do not believe either in external examinations or in any controls in schools or on teachers. This would mean that everything would depend on luck since every pupil would depend on the efficiency(实力),the ideals and the purpose of each teacher.

Without external examinations, employers will look for employees from the highly respected schools and from families known to them—a form of favoritism(偏爱) will replace equality. At the moment, the bright child from an ill-respected school can show certificates(证书)to prove he or she is suitable for a job, while the lack of a certificate indicates(表明)the unsuitability of a dull(迟钝的)child attending a well-respected school. This defence of excellence and opportunity would disappear if external examinations were taken away, and the bright child from a poor family would be a prisoner of his or her school's reputation, unable to compete for employment with the child from the favoured school.

The opponents(对手)of the examination system suggest that examinations are an evil force because they show differences between pupils.According to these people, there must be no special, different, academic class. They have even suggested that there should be no form of difference in sport or any other area:all jobs or posts should be filled by unsystematic selection. The selection would be made by people who themselves are presumably(可能)selected by some computer.

These people are notjust against school organisation, but are at war with the whole idea of modern competitive society and they are using children in schools for their destructive purposes. There is no reason why we should allow such people to determine the way our schools are organised when it is to the obvious disadvantage of the pupils,of the schools and of our society as a whole.

26.What is the opinion of the writer?

A.That we cannot have standards because examinations are not perfect.

B.That without external examinations there would be no standards.

C.That standards must keep changing in order to achieve equality.

D.That changing the standards could mean the end of equality.

27.What is the situation at the moment?

A.A school's reputation is not very important,as long as a child has a certificate.

B.A bright child doesn't need a certificate to get a job.

C.Children attending well-respected schools do not get certificates.

D.Many children who are suitable for a job have no proof of their suitability.

28.According to the writer, what would happen if external examinations were taken away?

A.Children from poor families would not be able to change school.

B.There would be no more opportunities and no more excellence.

C.Schools for bright children would lose their reputation.

D.Going to a favoured school would be the only way to get a good job.

29.What,according to the writer,do the opponents of the examination system say?

A.That computers should be selected to take over many jobs.

B.That particular people should not be chosen for particular jobs.

C.That examinations are only bad when they show differences between people.

D.That schools specialising in academic subjects should be done away with.

30.In what way do the opponents of the examination system want to influence schools?

A.They want children to compete more in school.

B.They want to reorganize schools.

C.They want schools to be more modern.

D.They want to destroy schools.

B)阅读下列短文,然后回答问题或完成句子。

Young Marconi loved books, especially those on science.Sounds can be made to travel,he thought,if they are given a push by electricity. If I can push a piece of wood across the waves(波浪)on water,I can also send sounds through the air waves by using electric power.

One day he called his mother and father up to his workroom for a surprise. He touched a little machine, and two floors below there was the sound ofa buzz(嗡嗡声).“How did you do it?”they asked.“Your machine is so far from the sound.”

“That's right,”he said joyfully.“I have just found a way to carry sounds without wires—a wireless way.”

Later he made a wireless machine and took it to England, where the public was ready to hear new ideas.“What will those machines do?”they asked.“I can send messages through the air,”he replied.

“Show us!”they said. And he did.On March 27,1899,Marconi pressed the key on his wireless at a small village on the coast of France. After a few minutes of dead silence,a sound returned from England:“Your message was received.Very good.”

Still this was not enough for him.He wanted to send his messages across the Atlantic Ocean, and he would not rest until this was done.

On the night of December 12,1901,a thin, sick man climbed to the top of a hillon the New found land coast. He waited there to receive the message from England.

The time came.“Now they are saying things to me,”he said.Ahalf-hour passed. No sound.Another half-hour and then—a faint(微弱的)sound—One,two, three times!“This must be it!”he cried. But he told no one.Instead,he waited for other messages sent during the next three days. All came through to him.

On December 15,1901,Marconi told the world that he had heard messages by wireless from across the Atlantic Ocean. His great invention led to many more wonderful things, like radios, which we allenjoy today.

Now We Have Cow Power

Even the barnyard can help produce energy.

These days, cattle are doing more than giving milk. They are also supplying energy. Energy made from cow waste,or manure,is being used to warm homes in at least one big city.

A company in Colorado makes a gas called methane out of cow manure.Methane will burn to make heat energy.Methane, like natural gas,is an important fuel. There are a lot of cows in Colorado. And so,there is a lot of cow manure. At present, the company buys the cow manure of over 100,000 cattle and carries the manure back to its methane factory.

There, the solid part of the manure is removed. The liquid that is left is put into special tanks. There, bacteria,or germs, feed on the liquid. As they feed, the bacteria turn the liquid into methane and other substances. The other substances are removed, and the methane is then sold to a gas company. The gas company sends the methane gas through a pipeline to homes and other buildings. The gas is used for heat and cooking.

But that is not all.The solid part of the manure is also used.It is treated and made into fertilizer and cattle feed. The feed is sold back to the cattle owners.Cows eat the food and make more manure. And the whole thing starts over again!
