Rio and its history

The city of Rio de Janeiro has a rich and colourful history. The seat of power of the Portuguese Colonial Empire in the early 19th century and later the capital of the Brazilian Republic, Rio has been a witness and key player in many chapters of the nation’s story. And, since times long past, the city has been a fertile ground for sport.

Copacabana Beach, Christ the Redeemer, Sugarloaf Mountain...it’s easy to understand why Rio is known as Cidade Maravilhosa—the Marvellous City.

With its beautiful beaches, awe-inspiring mountains and lush[4] rainforest, the city of Rio de Janeiro gives its inhabitants every reason to go outside and get active. Many different sports form a part of the daily routines of cariocas, as Rio’s residents are known.
[4] lush

Mascot

The name of the Olympic mascot is Vinicius, paying tribute to Brazilian musician Vinicius de Moraes. Vinicius is a mix of different Brazilian animals. His design takes inspiration from pop culture, as well as video game and animation characters. Alongside his Paralympic Games colleague, Vinicius represents the diversity of the Brazilian people and culture, as well as its exuberant nature.

The call for tenders for the creation of the Rio 2016 mascots was launched in November 2012, and was aimed at Brazilian companies and professionals in the fields of design, animation and illustration. The country’s major firms took part. After various selection phases, a multi-disciplinary jury unanimously selected the final project in August 2013. The Olympic and Paralympic mascots were unveiled simultaneously to the public on 23 November 2014.

Over the three weeks following the presentation of the Olympic and Paralympic mascots, a public vote took place to select their respective names. Three choices were on offer: Oba and Eba; Tiba Tuque and Esquindim; and Vinicius and Tom. A total of 323,327 votes were registered. The third proposal won the competition, with 44 per cent of the valid votes.

The mascots (life-sized costume versions) made their first public appearance at the Ginásio Experimental Olímpico Juan Antonio Samaranch, named after the former IOC President. This is a school in Rio, opened under the impetus of the Games and aimed at young sporting talents.

Logo
会徽

The 2016 Rio de Janeiro logo, which was first shown to the public on the Copacabana beach on New Year’s Eve, is the first ever three dimensional Olympic logo. The logo, which features an orange, a green and a blue figure, each intertwined to create both space and vibrancy, was created to showcase and represent the culture of Rio de Janeiro and Brazil while welcoming those from other nations, backgrounds and ways of life.

“The Rio 2016 Games brand communicates passion and transformation. The passion cariocas and Brazilians, in general, have for sport and celebration. And the transformation the Games are already bringing to Rio and Brazil,” Carlos Arthur Nuzman, the President of the Rio 2016 Organizing Committee, said on the Rio 2016 website.

The symbol was chosen because it best represented four ideals, according to the site. Those ideals include contagious energy, harmonious diversity, exuberant nature and Olympic spirit.

The design is reflective of the Rio de Janeiro bid, culture and ideals, according to International Olympic Committee President Jacques Rogge, who was present at the unveiling ceremony in Brazil on Dec. 31, 2010.

Torch Relay

The torch’s design unites movement, innovation and Brazilian flavour, reflecting the essence of the Rio 2016 Olympic Torch Relay, which will be a meeting of the traditional Olympic flame and the warmth of the Brazilian people, throughout the country.

The Olympic flame is an important symbol in the history of the Olympic Games, representing peace, unity and friendship. The flame is carried via the torches in a great relay, taking the Olympic message beyond the host city and ending with the lighting of the cauldron[5] at the Games Opening Ceremony.

In one of the main innovative aspects of the Rio 2016 Olympic Torch, the segments open, revealing elements of Brazilian flair[6]— harmonious diversity, contagious energy and exuberant nature—with the ground, sea, mountains, sky and sun represented in the colours of the Brazilian flag.

The highest part of the Olympic Torch is represented by the sun, which, like Brazilians, shines and illuminates[7] wherever it passes. Its colour is golden, representing the ultimate achievement at the Games.

Olympic spirit is presented in the triangular texture, reflecting the three Olympic values (excellence, friendship and respect), and in the segment floating effect, inspired by the bodies of athletes flying through the air.

A compoud axis expresses unity and diversity, with individual parts that form a whole.
