在北京画院收藏的齐白石作品中，有两百多件只画工虫，而不画花卉，没有落款，也没有印章的画稿。据齐白石的弟子娄师白回忆，因为齐白石的草虫很受欢迎，他担心自己年老后受视力限制，不能再画工细之作，于是在六七十岁左右，趁眼力尚好，预先画了一批工虫，待以后不能画时再补画花卉。因此，我们现在还能看到齐白石很多画于三四十年代的工虫精品，甚至还有50年代的作品。从北京画院收藏的这批草虫画稿和娄老的回忆来推测，它们很可能是齐白石在早年的画稿上添景而成。 这批画稿大多只画一两只工虫，很少有绘多只的画稿，像这样在一幅之上绘九只工虫的更是极为罕见。它们大小错落，聚散有致，虽然除了工虫，一片空白，观者却能从它们的动态中设想不同的情景。上方那只展翅飞翔的红蜻蜓，似乎将要落在一朵花上，旁边那只扇动双翅的蜜蜂似乎刚采完花蜜，即将飞走。下端七只草虫似乎在花下参加一场热闹的聚会：一只大肚的蝈蝈，三只大小、形态各异的飞蛾，一只灵巧的蚂蚱，一只蟋蟀，甚至还有一只小小的苍蝇……它们为什么聚在一起，在老人没有落墨添加花草之前，一切皆有可能，但老人画笔下的世界，或许永远都是你无法想象的。 In the Beijing Fine Art Academy's collection, there are over two hundreds pieces of paintings that only draw fine-brush insects, with no flowers, no inscriptions or seals. According to Qi Baishi’s pupil Lou Shibai that Qi Baishi’s grass and insects paintings are very popular, he was afraid that as he grew old, his weakening eyesight would make it difficult for him to draw fine-brush paintings, so he drew a batch of fine-brush insects at his sixties and seventies when he could still saw clearly, leaving space for flowers that could be added later. Therefore, we can see many masterpieces of fine-brush insects that were painted in the 1930s and 1940s, even 1950s. From these insects paintings collected by Beijing Fine Art Academy and the memories of Lou Shibai, it was possible that they were added on unfinished paintings by Qi Baishi. Most of these unfinished paintings only have one or two fine-brush insects on them, only a few have several insects. Nine insects like this one is rare. There are big and small ones, some are getting together and some are scattered around. As there is large space apart from insects, one could imagine many different scenes from their gestures. The flying red dragonfly on top of the painting looks like it is about to land on a flower, and the bee beside it beating its wings looks like it has just finished making honey and is about to fly away. The seven insects at the bottom seem to be at a bustling party under flowers. A big-belly grasshopper, three moths of different sizes and postures, an agile locust, a cricket and even a small fly are also in the picture, one may wonder why they get together. Before the old man adds the flowers and grasses, anything is possible, yet the world under his brush could also be something that you could never imagine.
