People think of Seoul as such a good shopping destination that they often forget that it’s also a good place to see well-preserved cultural heritage and experience South Korean pop culture.

So, what would it be like if you skipped shopping to experiencing the local lifestyle?

Those who are dressed in traditional South Korean attire can enter scenic spots such as Gyeongbokgung Palace for free.

The city is friendly for walking.

We booked a free guided two-hour tour in advance on the official website dobo.visitseoul.net, which offers 25 themed walking tours.

We first arrived at Dongdaemun, where there is the 18-kilometer-long wall built more than 600 years ago to protect the ancient capital.

The wall stretches along the foothills of a mountain range. It has secret doors for those who need to go out if the city’s gates are shut.

Inside the walled area is the Ihwa-dong Mural village, which boasts beautiful paintings on the walls of houses and on the steep stairs. It’s a popular place for filming South Korean soap operas and shows.

It’s like an adventure when you explore the village. When we strolled through, climbing the steep stone steps and entering the narrow alleys, we saw a lot of colorful graffiti including cute bunnies.

More than two dozen young women had queued up to have their photos taken in front of a wall which had a painting showing a blue sky, white clouds and a pair of angel wings.

The site has become popular after a South Korean superstar posed here for a photo.

The murals in the village came up in 2006, after the local government started an art project to improve the village’s environment.

Tourism has impacted the life of the local people in recent years. So, you see many cute cartoon street signs reminding visitors to be quiet while they are in the residential area.

Near the village is Daehangno, or College Street. A popular neighborhood with young people, it has more than 150 small theaters and galleries. It also hosts theater festivals throughout the year.

This neighborhood took shape when the Seoul National University was moved from the area in 1975.

Marronnier Park was then built in Daehangno.

The park is now a place where you can enjoy free music and dance performances by young people.

Near the park is Gwangjang Market, once known for its clothes and farm produce, but which has since grown and includes local street food, that is now its calling card for both denizens and visitors.

As for food choices, our translator Ms Park says that the locals like to eat mung bean pancake on rainy days because the sizzling sound of the pancake in hot oil is like the pitter-patter of the rain.

In Bukchon Hanok Village, it’s like a time-travel experience. Once a dwelling place for royal families and aristocrats of the Joseon Dynasty (1392-1910), it now boasts more than 900 hanoks, or traditional Korean houses.

In the quaint alleys are residences rather than shops and restaurants. The village has opened 23 of the old houses to the public, and they are all State-owned.

One of them is the Dong-Lim Knot Workshop.

In this small house, tourists can learn how to make simple bracelets, rings and knots from string and view exhibitions of traditional ornamental knots such as waistbands and tassels.

The teacher taught us how to make a simple bracelet.

Simsinheon is a private-owned old house. It means “a house where the heart is found”. It was constructed between 2002 and 2004 by professionals.

They collected pinewood, which was more than a 100 years old, and built the house using mortise and tenon joints instead of nails. The house integrates modern artworks into traditional architecture.

The main hall has a layer of glass doors, providing reflections of the sky and the clouds. It is relaxing to sit here, drink plum tea and enjoy the breeze.

Ms Park says some young people often rent a small hanok to hold a wedding ceremony. That’s her plan, too.

Cheongdam-dong is a place where newly-weds buy their wedding dresses, do their make-up and have wedding photos taken. Some overseas travellers also come here for the same purpose, too.

Then, there is Jenny House, a beauty salon that is popular with South Korean superstars, who come for hairstyling and make-up. So, don’t be surprised if you see a superstar when you are getting your hair done.

The make-up artist uses a burned match to gently brush my eyelashes and says it’s like a hair curling wand for the eyelashes and will make the curls last longer.

In the South Korean TV series Answer Me 1988, the heroine uses a burned match to curl her eyelashes.

As for shopping, the city’s small markets provide things that cannot be found in duty free shops.

The Seoul Bamdokkaebi Night Market is held in four places in the city.

At one of the places, Dongdaemun Design Plaza, we sample snacks from around the world, enjoy traditional and modern performances and buy original handmade items such as accessories and leather purses. Pretty rings, earrings and bracelets are available at reasonable prices.

Meanwhile, Yeonnam-dong, which is next to Hongik University, has a market with young people and students selling handmade items including painted postcards on weekends.

It used to be a farmers’ market, but as there were very few visitors the local government made it a flea market.

The market is now frequented by young locals, who also visit the nearby alleys packed with restaurants, bakeries and cafes.
