Morning! It's been a long time since I've written how-to articles related to English. Writing news articles is just so much fun! But, one of my goals with this official account is to give you the techniques you need to learn English efficiently and effectively.

I get this question from fans a lot:

I've learned English for X years,

and my reading and listening is okay,

but I can't speak.

Help me!!!

There's a story in the Bible about Jesus healing a man who was deaf and mute. If only I had that power! Wow, I'd be the richest English teacher in the world hahaha.

Unfortunately, I'm not Jesus, so I can't place my hands on your face and magically teach you how to speak English. However, I can give you a very powerful technique that can instantly cure you of your 'mute English'. Are you ready?

But first...to maximize the effectiveness of this technique, I need to introduce you to a fundamental concept in linguistics.

How many Chinese characters can you read? Okay, now how many can you write from memory? Chances are if I asked you to write out some common words in Chinese, you would forget how to write at least 5%-10% of them. Why?

Use it, or lose it.

Smartphones are steadily replacing pen and paper as the main tool of communication, and most people use pinyin to input Chinese. Remember all those awful years you spent memorizing characters? (I certainly do!) If you don't constantly practice your characters, your brain will 'unlearn' how to write them. Use it, or lose it.

However, this doesn't mean that you can't recognise those characters when you see them. You'll still be able to read the word 打喷嚏, even if your hand can't produce it.

Okay, so how does this relate to English? Well, this example just demonstrated the difference between passive language (recognizing the characters) and active language (producing them).

Throughout most of your life, your English education has done an excellent job of teaching you passive English, in preparation for taking tests. You memorize hundreds of words, take the rest, and then move on to the next batch. In your school, that's called 'Learning English'.

BREAKING NEWS: It's not! Or rather, it's only half the battle. Learning how to recognize English but not speaking it is like training for a 5K marathon but never participating. It kind of feels like a waste of time, right?

So please, please, don't feel bad that you have learned English for X number of years, but still can't speak it. If you want to blame anyone, blame your teachers and your school curriculum. Don't blame yourself for the past.

Now, it's time to get serious. I've told you the truth, and I'm going to teach you how to fix it. From this point on, you ARE responsible for your learning. You can't blame your teachers anymore. You can only blame yourself if you don't learn.

I'm going to teach you the technique now. Are you ready?

What you'll need:

English Dialogue

Mouth + vocal cords

Mountain top (Optional)

This technique is actually very simple, but effective. I'm going to give you a dialogue, and you will read it ALOUD. Don't be quiet. Read it as loudly as you want. The louder, the better. (Extra points for climbing a mountain and shouting it from the apex, Li Yang style.)

Once you have memorized the dialogue, I want you to start switching out the underlined words. Substitute new names, new places, etc. Continue speaking the dialogue ALOUD until you have mastered it.

   And then...

That's it! Literally all you need to do to cure yourself of mute English is read dialogues aloud and substitute out keywords. Now that you've broken the seal, you can continue using this method to memorize more and more English dialogues.

I'm going to give you a sample dialogue here to practice.

DIALOGUE

Ross: Hey David, what are you doing tonight?

David: My girlfriend and I are going to the movies

Ross: That sounds fun! Mind if I tag along?

David: Uhh... That would be weird.

Ross: I don't mind being a third wheel. What movie are you seeing?

David: Sorry, you can't come. My girlfriend hates you.

Switch out David for Peter, Harry, Jessica, etc.

Switch out tonight with this morning, this evening, this afternoon.

    Tonight可以换成this morning(早上)、this evening(今夜)、this afternoon(下午)

Switch out girlfriend with boyfriend, wife, husband, lover

    Girlfrend可以换成boyfriend(男友)、wife(老婆)、husband(老公),lover(爱人)

Switch out fun with amazing, great, interesting.

    Fun可以换成amazing(很赞)、great(很棒)、interesting(很有意思)

   You get the idea!

Well, that's all for today. If this post helped you, please share it with your friends. Together, we can cure 'Mute English'!
