Where is Neuschwanstein Castle?

Neuschwanstein Castle sits above the small village of Hohenschwangau in the South West of Bavaria in Germany, close to the Austrian border. The nearest railway station is 5 kilometers away in the town of Füssen. This article explains how to visit Neuschwanstein using public transportation from Munich, Augsburg and further afield.

How to get to Neuschwanstein


1. Catch a train to Füssen

You should allow approximately 2 and a half hours to get to Neuschwanstein from Munich, and about 1 and a half to get to Neuschwanstein from Augsburg.

How to save over 22 Euros on your train ticket

If you travel at the weekend or leave after 9am Monday to Friday, you will be able to use a 'BayernKarte'. These are special train tickets that entitle you to travel anywhere by train within Bavaria for an entire day.

If you are travelling by your self it will cost 22 Euros for the day. Even better if you are travelling in a group it is only an extra 4 Euros for each additional person in your group for up to 5 people in total. This means for a group of 5 it will only cost 38 Euros to travel for one day (7.80 Euros each). You can also travel with your own children or grandchildren without paying any extra.

Tip

You can find the timetables for the buses on the Deutschesbahn website as well as the train's. Germany's public transport system is conveniently integrated.

The buses are generally timed so that they arrive at the same time as trains. Be aware that in summer months they can be really busy.

2. From Füssen you can catch the following buses to Hohenschwangau:

Buses run regularly, and it takes less than 10 minutes to reach Hohenschwangau.

  • Bus 73 in the direction to Steingaden / Garmisch-Partenkirchen
  • Bus 78 in the direction to Schwangau until you reach the stop Hohenschwangau / Alpseestra?e.
  • Bus 9606 Bus direction: Post/Bahnhof, Garmisch-Partenkirchen

A return ticket will cost you 2.30 Euros and can be purchased from the driver. However the 'Bayernkarte' is valid on the buses as well as trains, if you have one of these simply show the driver when you board.

3. Purchase of tickets in Hohenschwangau village

If you want to go inside the Palace you must buy a ticket from the Ticketcenter in Hohenschwangau in advance.

You can only see inside Neuschwanstein if you go on a guided tour. Tickets are timed, and you must show up at Neuschwanstein at the time your tour starts.

Guided tours are offered in German and English. You can also go on audio guided tours in Japanese, French, Spanish, Portuguese, Italian, Dutch, Czech, Russian, Polish, Mandarin and Hungarian, Slovenian and Greek.

Please be aware that Neuschwanstein is very popular with tourists, and it can be very busy, especially during peak tourist season in summer. At certain times you may find you have to wait a couple of hours to be able to purchase your tickets. You may wish to reserve your tickets in advance, you can do so online, or by phone or email. Please note that the online booking form is currently only available in German. If this causes difficulty you can use google translate to work it out. If you reserve tickets you must do so at least a day in advance, and you must still pick up your tickets from the ticket center. However you will be able to join a fast tracked queue.

Getting from Hohenschwangau village to Neuschwanstein

Once you have got your ticket for Neuschwanstein in Hohenschwangau you can make your way up to the castle in three ways:

  • On foot in 40 minutes
  • By bus (these are specially organised private buses, so your train ticket will not be valid)
  • By horse drawn carriage.

Lots of information about these options will be available in Hohenschwangau, and the paths are clearly labelled. You should be able to pick up a free map. You may also want to walk around and explore some of the beautiful surrounding countryside whilst you are there.
