本月7日共和党对戈萨奇大法官的提名进入投票程序。为了避免民主党发起“冗长议事”（filibuster）阻止投票，参议院多数党领袖、共和党参议员米奇麦康奈尔6日决定发起投票，对“冗长议事”规则进行修改，成功扫清了障碍。3名民主党参议员投出赞成票，戈萨奇的提名以54-45的微弱优势顺利获得通过。他将取代去年突然去世的保守派大法官斯卡利亚。戈萨奇先后就读于哥伦比亚大学、哈佛法学院，并在牛津大学获得了法理学博士学位。他曾为前席大法官司Byron White和Anthony Kennedy担任过书记员（clerk），过去10年一直是第十巡回上诉法院（United States Court of Appeals for the Tenth Circuit）的法官。
