Five Regulated Verses as Response to Other Poems

What follows are five regulated verses as response to Mr. Li Zhengguo and Mr. Li Zhihua’s poems. The response to Mr. Li Zhengguos consists of two heptasylabbic poems and a pantasyllabic one, and the response to Mr. Liang Zhihuas consists of two heptasyllabic verses.

Three Poems——Composed as Response to Li Zhengguo’s by Following His Rhyme Scheme

The WeChat informed me that recently, Mr. Li Zhengguo went to Huaining and then to Qianshan. He visited Erqiao Park and Sanzu Temple, and climbed up the Tianzhu Mountains. Since he visited my hometown and wrote poems about the scenery spots but I couldn’t accompany him, I would like to write three poems as response to his by following his rhyme scheme.

1 A Poem about the Erqiao Park in Qianshan

To please more tourists, a pavilion was built full of grace,

After fashion, they said prayers to moon and gods apace.

With their charm, the pretty Qiao sisters honored ladies all,

The monarch and ministers in Wu lit stars big or small.

With their three torches, the State of Wu lit the hostile boats,

They burnt million of army men of Wei and cut their throats.

Ancestors plant trees to shelter posterities so fine,

And to make a decent tour, men and women are in line.

(Translated on 12/04/2017)

Note: Later, Mr. Li zhengguo revised the poem and turned the third couplet into “The beauties, of royal grace, overwhelmed the whole city, //They possessed the exquisiteness and attract generals.” In that case, I need to change the last line of the same couplet of my poem into “They protected their state from the attack of Cao Wei.”

2 A Poem about the Third Ancestor Temple

After Buddhism was spread in China all,

Chan School found valley clouds lovely though small.

They built a temple on the Phoenix Hill,

They found River Wan a nice bath not still.

Monk Can drilled himself hard in Buddhist light,

Famous poets wrote poems with delight.

The door keeps open to welcome donors,

Tourists praise your poems fine as honors.

(Translated on 12/04/2017)

Note: The Third Ancestor Temple was built by the mouth of the valley of the Phoenix Hill; Monk Can is actually the Third Ancestor; many scholars and statesmen left their poems or inscriptions around the Third Ancestor Temple and among the most famous are Wang Anshi, Su Dongpo, Huang Tingjian and Li Gonglin.

3 The Tianzhu Mountains

Without slanting, a column here supports the sky,

Natural power made it what it is, after try.

Emperor Wu of Han honored it as South Mount,

Wan Monarch listened to zheng as a pleasure fount.

Leopards can live in Mount known as Snow on Fine Days

Water in Lion Peak cannot bring up whales as fays

Each adds to other, fog and cliff of the mountain,

The monks and farmers strive for a fine life fountain.

(Translated on 12/04/2017)

Notes:

1.The Tianzhu Mountains were honored by Emperor Wu of the Han Dynasty as the Mountains of South. But the story about the Monarch of State Wan listening to the song plaid by zheng from North is fictional;

2.Snow on Fine Days is the shortened form of Tianzhu Qingxue or Snow on Fine Days in the Tianzhu Mountains, and it is one of the famous scenes; the Lion Peak is the shortened form of the Peak of the Lion in Heaven, another scenery spot. Here the mountains collect the water resources and there spans a Bridge for the Immortals.

Two Poems

1 Du Yu, the Bird Cries Year after Year in Rain

——A poem as a companion to Mr. Liang Zhihua’s The Cuckoo composed by following Mr. Liang’s rhyme pattern.

Du Yu, the bird cries hard year after year in rain,

The bird and the flower are named the same way, it’s plain.

It’s right for the bird to urge farmers to plant crops,

It’s doubtful to say that the bird cries out blood drops.

As a sage, Emperor Shun passed the throne to Yu,

It was so foolish for the King of Shu to do.

The bird, poets and painters like Wang Wei create,

Queen of Heaven built orchestras for love so great!

(Translated 0n 11/04/2017)

Note: The cuckoo belongs to rhodedondron or the golden cuckoo genus in Chinese.

Having Left Mr. Pan, They Get on Poets’ Board

——A poem as a companion to Mr. Liang Zhihua’s The Azalea by following his rhyme pattern

With spring flowers gone, the cuckoo cries out of the yard,

The azalea’s tender and I’m home sick, so hard.

The stamens and petals are both lovely in face,

In appearance and posture, the flower is of grace.

When the apricot’s blooming, naked is the twig,

When azaleas come out, they have green leaves so trig.

They are in man’s favor both at home and abroad,

Having left Mr. Pan, they get on poets’ board.

(Translated on 11/04/2017)

Note: In Chinese, the azalea is known as Dujuan flower and it is also known as Shan Chichu or the waver on the mountains;  Mr. Pan refers to Mr. Pan Shanjin, the famous modern azalea painter.
