Duke
Go one and call the Jew to the court. Make room and let him standbefore our face. Shylock, the world thinks, and I think so, too, that you but lead’st this fashion of your malice to the last hourof the act and then ‘tis thought you’ll show your mercy andremorse, more strange than is your strange apparent cruelty. Whatsay you, Jew? We all expect a gentle answer.
Shylock
I have informed your grace of what I purpose, and by our holySabbath have I sworn to have the due and forfeit of my bond. If youdeny it, let the danger light upon your charter and your city’sfreedom. You’ll ask me why I rather choose to have a weight ofhuman flesh than to receive three thousand ducats. I will notanswer that. But say, it is my humour – is it answered? What if myhouse be troubled by a rat and I am pleased to give ten thousandducats to ha
ve it killed? What, are you answered yet? Some men there are lovenot a gaping pig, some that are mad if they behold a cat, andothers when the bagpipe sings in the nose cannot contain theirurine. For affection, master of passion, sways it to the mood ofwhat it likes or loathes. Now for your answer. As there is no firmreason to be rendered why he cannot abide a gaping pig, why he, aharmless, necessary cat, why he a woollen bagpipe, but of forcemust yield to such inevitable shame as to afford himself beingoffended, so can I give no reason, nor will I not, more than alodged hate and certain loathing I bear Antonio, that I follow thusthis losing suit against him. Are you answered?
Bassanio
This is no answer, you unfeeling man, to excuse the current of yourcruel.
Shylock
I am not bound to please you with my answers.
Bassanio
Do all men kill the things they do not love?
Shylock
Heats any man the thing he would no kill?
Bassanio
Every offence is not a hate at first.
Shylock
You would have a serpent sting you twice?
Antonio
I pray you, think you question with the Jew: you may as well gostand upon the beach and bid the main flood lower its usual height. You may as well question with the wolf, Why he has made the ewebleat for the lamb. You may as well do anything most hard as seekto soften that then which what’s harder, his Jewish heart. Therefore I do beseech you, make no more offers, use no farthermeans, but with all just and plain conveniency let me havejudgement and the Jew his will.
Bassanio
You loaned three thousand ducats! Here is six!
Shylock
If every ducat in six thousand ducts were in six parts, and everypart a ducat, I would not draw them; I would have my bond.
Duke
How shall you hope for mercy, giving none?
Shylock
What judgment should I fear, doing no wrong? You have among youmany a purchased slave, which like your asses and your dogs andmules, you use in abject and in slavish parts because you boughtthem. Shall I say to you, let them be free? Marry them to yourheirs. Why sweat they under burdens? Let their beds be made as softas yours! Their palates seasoned with your food. You will answer:‘The slaves are ours.’ So do I answer you, the pound of flesh thatI demand of him is dearly bought. ‘Tis mine. ‘Tis mine! ‘Tis mine. And I will have it. If you deny me, fie upon your law. There is noforce in the decrees of Venice. I stand for judgement. Answer.Shall I have it?
Duke
Silence! Silence! Silence! Upon my power I may dismiss this courtunless Bellario, a learned doctor that I have sent for to determinethis, come here today.
Messenger
My lord! Here stays without a messenger with letters from thedoctor new come from Padua.
Duke
Come you from Padua, from Bellario?
Nerissa
From both, my lord. Bellario greets your grace.
Bassanio
Why do you whet your knife so earnestly?
Shylock
To cut the forfeiture from that bankrupt there.
Gratiano
Can no prayers pierce you?
Shylock
No, none that you have wit enough to make.
Gratiano
Be you damned, inexecrable dog and for your life let justice beaccused.
Shylock
Till you can rail the seal from off my bond, you but offend youlungs to speak so loud. Prepare your wit, good youth, or it willfall to cureless ruin. I stand here for law. I stand for law.
Duke
Silence! Silence! This letter does commend a young and learneddoctor to our court. Well, where is he?
Nerissa
He attendeth here hard by to know your answer, whether you’ll admithim.
Duke
Go, give him courteous conduct to this place. Meantime, the courtshall hear Bellario’s letter. “You grace shall understand that atthe receipt of your letter, I am very sick but in the instant yourmessenger came there was with me a young doctor of Rome whose nameis Balthasar. He comes at my asking to take my place. I beseechyou, let his lack of years be no impediment, for I never knew soyoung a body with so old a head. I leave him to your gradciousacceptance.” You heard Bellario, what he writes. Oh, and here, Itake it, is the doctor come. You are welcome. Take your place. Areyou acquainted with the difference that holds this present questionin the court?
Portia
I am informed thoroughly of the case. Which is the merchant hereand which the Jew?
Duke
Antonio and old Shylock, both stand forth.
Portia
Is your name Shylock?
Shylock
Shylock is my name.
Portia
Of a strange nature is the suit you follow, yet in such rule thatthe Venetian law cannot deny you as you do proceed. You stand withhis power, do you not?
Antonio
Ay, so he says.
Portia
Do you confess the bond?
Antonio
I do.
Portia
Then must the Jew be merciful.
Shylock
On what compulsion must I? Tell me that.
Portia
The quality of mercy is not strained. It droppeth as the gentlerain from heaven upon the place beneath. It is twice blessed – itblesseth him that gives and him that takes. ‘Tis mightiest in themighty. It becomes the throned monarch better than his crown. Hissceptre shows the force of temporal power, the attribute to awe andmajesty wherein doth sit the dread and fear of kings. But mercy isabove this sceptred sway. It is enthroned in the heart of kings. Itis an attribute to God himself and earthly power doth then showlikest God’s when mercy seasons justice. Therefore, Jew, thoughjustice be your plea, consider this. That in the course of justice, none of us should see salvation. We do pray for mercy and that sameprayer doth teach us all to render the deeds of mercy. I have spokethus much to mitigate the justice of your plea, which if you followthis strict course of Venice must needs give sentence against themerchant there.
Shylock
My deeds upon my head. I crave the law, the penalty and forfeit ofmy bond.
Portia
Is he not able to discharge the money?
Bassanio
Yes, here I tender it for him in court, twice the sum. If that isnot enough, I will be bound to pay it ten times over, on forth ofmy hands, my head, my heart! If this is not enough it must appearthat malice bears down on truth. I beseech you, wrest once the lawto your authority – to do a great right, do a little wrong and curbthis cruel devil of his will.
Portia
It must not be; there is no power in Venice can alter a decreeestablished. ‘Twill be recorded for a precedent and many an errorby the same example will rush into the state. It cannot be.
Shylock
A Daniel come to judgement. Yea, a Daniel! O wise young judge, howI do honour you.
Portia
I pray you let me look upon the bond.
Shylock
Most reverend doctor, here it is.
Portia
Shylock, there is twice the money offered you.
Shylock
An oath, an oath. I have an oath in heaven. Shall I lay perjuryupon my soul? No, not for Venice.
Portia
Why, this bond is forfeit, and lawfully at this time the Jew mayclaim a pound of flesh to be by him cut off nearest the merchant’sheart. Be merciful, take twice your money, bid me tear thebond.
Shylock
When it is paid, according to the terms.
Antonio
Most heartily I do beseech the court, to give the judgement.
Portia
Then thus it is. You must prepare your bosom for his knife.
Shylock
O noble judge, excellent young man.
Portia
For the intent and purpose of the law has full relation to thepenalty, which here appeareth due upon the bond.
Shylock
‘Tis very true, O wise and upright judge. How much elder are youthan you look.
Portia
Therefore, lay bare your bosom.
Shylock
Ay, his breast. So says the bond, does it not, noble judge? Nearestthe heart. Those are the very words.
Portia
It is so. Are there balance here to weigh the flesh?
Shylock
I have them here.
Portia
Have by some surgeon, Shylock, on your charge, to stop his wounds, lest he do bleed to death.
Shylock
Is it so nominated in the bond?
Portia
It is not so expressed but what of that? ‘Twere good you do so muchfor charity.
Shylock
I cannot find it. ‘Tis not in the bond.
Portia
You, merchant: have you anything to say?
Antonio
But little. I am armed and well-prepared. Give me your hand,Bassanio. Fare thee well. Grieve not that I am fallen to this foryou. For herein doth fortune show herself more kind than is hercustom. Command me to thy honourable wife. Tell her the process ofAntonio’s end. Say how I loved you, speak me fair in death. Andwhen the tale is told, bid her be judge whether Bassanio had notonce a love. Repent but you that you shall lose your friend and yourepent not that he pays your debt. For it the Jew do cut but deepenough. I’ll pay instantly with all my heart.
Bassanio
Antonio, I am married to a wife, which is as dear to me as lifeitself. But life itself, my wife and all the world are not with meesteemed above your life. I would lose all, ay, sacrifice them all, here to this devil to deliver you.
Gratiano
I have a wife who I protest I love, I would she were in heaven, soshe could entreat some power to change this cursed Jew!
Shylock
I have a daughter! Would that any of the stock of Barrabas been herhusband rather than a Christian. We trifle time, I pray you, pursuesentence.
Portia
A pound of that same merchant’s flesh is yours. The court awardsit, and the law does give it.
Shylock
Most rightful judge.
Portia
And you must cut his flesh from off his breast. The court awards itand the law allows it.
Shylock
Most learned judge. A sentence. Come. Prepare.
Portia
Tarry a little, there is something else. This bond doth give theehere no jot of blood. The words expressly are’ a pound of flesh, take then your bond, take then your pound of flesh, but in thecutting of it, if you do shed one drop of Christian blood, yourlands and goods are by the laws of Venice confiscate unto the stateof Venice.
Gratiano
O upright judge! Mark, Jew! Learned judge!
Shylock
Is that the law?
Portia
Yourself shall see the act. For as you urgest justice, be assuredyou shall have justice more than you desire.
Shylock
Well. I take the offer then, pay the bond twice and let theChristian go.
Bassanio
Here is the money.
Portia
Soft. The Jew shall have all justice. No haste, he shall havenothing but the penalty. Therefore, prepare you to cut off theflesh. Shed then no blood nor cut you less nor more but just apound of flesh. If you take more or less than just a pound, be itbut so much as makes it light or heavy in the substance or divisonof the twentieth part of one poor scruple, nay, if the scale doturn but in the estimation of a hair, you die. And all your goodsare confiscate.
Gratiano
A second Daniel! Now infidel I have you on the hip.
Portia
Why doth the Jew pause?
Shylock
Shall I not have even my principal?
Portia
You shall have nothing but your forfeiture, to be so taken at yourperil, Jew.
Shylock
Why then, the devil give him good of it! I’ll stay no longerquestion.
Portia
Tarry Jew. The law has yet another hold on you. It is enacted inthe laws of Venice, if it be proved against an alien that by director indirect attempts he seek the life of any citizen, the partyagainst the which he does contrive shall seize one half of hisgoods, the other half comes to the privy coffer of the state, andthe offender’s life lies in the mercy of the Duke only, against allother voice. In which predicament, I say you stand. Down, therefore, and beg mercy of the Duke.
Gratiano
Beg that you may have leave to hang yourself.
Duke
That you shall see the difference in our spirit, I pardon you yourlife, before you ask it. For half your wealth, it is Antonio’s theother half shall come to the general state.
Shylock
Nay, take my life and all, pardon not that, you take my house whenyou do take the prop that doth sustain my house. You take my lifewhen you take the means whereby I live.
Portia
What mercy can you render him, Antonio?
Gratiano
A halter gratis – nothing else, for God’s sake.
Antonio
So please my lord the Duke and all the court to quit the fine forone half of his goods. I am content, so he will let me have theother half in trust, relinquish it upon his death unto thegentleman that lately stole his daughter. One thing provided more, that, for this favour, he shall presently become a Christian.
Duke
He shall do this or else I do recant the pardon. I late pronouncedhere.
Portia
Are you contented, Jew? What do you say?
Shylock
I am contented.
恩。
Duke
Clerk, prepare a deed of gift.
Shylock
I pray you, give me leave to go from hence. I am not well. I will…send a deed after me and I will sign it.
Duke
Get you gone, then, but do it. Court dismissed.
Bassanio
Most worthy gentleman, I and my friend have by your wisdom beenthis day acquitted of most grievous penalties, in ileu whereof, three thousand ducats, due unto the Jew we freely pay yourcourteous pains withal.
Antonio
And stand indebted, over and above, in love and service to you evermore.
Portia
He is well paid that is well satisfied and I, delivering you, amsatisfied and therein do account myself well paid – fare youwell.
Bassanio
Dear sir, of force I must attempt you further. Take someremembrance of us, as a tribute, not as a fee. Run me two things, Ipray you. Not to deny me and to pardon me.
Portia
You press me far, therefore I will yield. Give me your gloves I’llwear them for your sake. And for your love, I’ll take this ringfrom you. Do not draw back your hand, I’ll take no more, and you,in love, shall not deny me this.
Bassanio
This ring… Good sir, alas, it is a trifle, I would not shame myselfto give you this.
Portia
I will have nothing else but only this.
Bassanio
There’s more depends on this than on the value. The dearest ring inall of Venice will I give to you, and find it out by proclamation, only for this I pray you, pardon me.
Portia
Oh, I see, sir. You are liberal in offers, you taught me first tobeg, and now methinks you teach me how a beggar should beanswered.
Bassanio
This ring was given me by my wife. And when she put it on she mademe vow that I should neither sell nor give nor lose it.
Portia
That excuse serves many man to save their gifts and if your wife benot a madwoman, then know her well I have deserved this ring. Shewould not hold out enemy forever for giving it to me.
Antonio
My lord Bassanio, let him have the ring. Let not the deserving andmy love as well be valued against your wife’s commandment.
Scene 2
Portia
Enquire the Jew’s house out. Give him this deed and let him signit.
