A new study suggests regular moderate exercise improves thinking and memory skills for people over the age of 50.

Physical activity has already been shown to slow down the decline in brain power that comes with the age,but findings recently published in the British Journal of Sports Medicine are the first to point out that it actually boosts mental performance.

Experts at the University of Canberra based their findings on dozens of other recent studies.

They highlighted the benefits of combining both resistance training and aerobic exercises like fast walking or cycling.

The study’s lead author said,“ Aerobic exercise was associated with enhanced cognitive abilities, while resistance training was associated with improvements in executive function, memory and working memory. '

Researchers suggest people over 50 spend 45 minutes to an hour every week on moderate to vigorous low-impact exercise.
