Be flat broke To have no money. Primarily heard in US. Penniless without any money whatsoever; totally impoverished; destitute. Strapped for cash to describe someone who doesn't have much money. People often use this phrase to explain why they can't do something like go out to a bar or lend a friend money. Example I can't even pay the rent this month. I'm flat broke. Stranded and penniless, I called home, but no one cared enough to help. I don't think I can go this time. I'm kind of strapped for cash.
