The Little Red Hen《小红母鸡》，一个英国民间故事，美国纽约图书馆推荐的100本童书之一。这本书也非常有意思，小朋友会很喜欢哦。很多英语学习分级阅读教材也收录了这本书，有多个版本，都很精彩。

有一只小母鸡发现了小麦的种子，然后就开始播种、收割、磨麦粉直到到做面包。在此过程中她请求dog、cat、mouse等朋友帮忙，但他们的回答是：“NOT I”，可最后面包做好了，他们却都想吃。小母鸡会同意么？你会同意么？

The Little Red Hen《小红母鸡》

Once upon a time, a cat, a dog, a mouse and a little red hen all lived together in a cosy little house.

从前，有一只猫，一只狗，一只老鼠和一只小红母鸡共同生活在一个温暖舒适的小房子里。

The cat liked sleep all day on the soft coach.

小猫喜欢整天躺在柔软的沙发上睡觉。

The dog liked to nap all day on the sunny back porch.

小狗喜欢整天在满是阳光的后廊打盹。

And the mouse liked to snooze all day in the warm chair by the fireside。

小老鼠喜欢整天在壁炉边温暖的椅子上睡觉。

So the little red hen had to do all the housework.

因此小红母鸡不得不做所有的家务。

She cooked the meals, and washed the dishes, and maked the beds.

她做饭，洗衣，整理床铺。

She swept the floor and washed the windows，and mended the clothes. 

她扫地，擦窗户，缝补衣服。

She raked the leaves

and mowed the grass

and hoed the garden

她扫落叶，修剪草坪，锄花园。

One day when she was hoeing the garden she found some grains of wheat.

一天，当小红母鸡在锄花园的时候，她发现了一些麦种。

“Who will plant this wheat?”

谁愿意种这些麦种？

“Not I.” said the cat.

“我不种。”猫说

“Not I.” said the dog.

“我不种。”狗说

“Not I.” said the mouse.

“我不种。”老鼠说

“Then I will. ” said the little red hen. And she did

'好吧，那么我来种！'小红母鸡说。然后她开始行动了。

Each morning the little red hen watered the wheat and pulled the weeds.

每天早上小红母鸡都给这些麦种浇水，拔草。

Soon the wheat pushed through the ground andbegan to grow tall. Later the wheat was ripe.

没过多久，种子就发芽了并且开始长高。很快，麦子就熟了。

When the wheat was ripe，the little red hen asked “ who will cut this wheat? ”

麦子熟了，小红母鸡问到“谁愿意割麦子？”

“Not I.” said the cat.

“我不割。”猫说

“Not I.” said the dog.

“我不割。”狗说

“Not I.” said the mouse.

“我不割。”老鼠说

“Then I will.”said the little red Hen.And she did.

'好吧，那么我来割！'小红母鸡说。然后她完成了。

When the wheat was all cut，the little red hen asked.“Now, who will take this wheat to the mill to be ground into flour? '

当麦子割完了，小红母鸡问到”现在谁愿意把这些麦子带到磨房磨成面粉？“

“Not I.” said the cat.

“我不干。”猫说

“Not I.” said the dog.

“我不干。”狗说

“Not I.” said the mouse.

“我不干。”老鼠说

“Then I will.”said the little red Hen.And she did.

'好吧，那么我来干！'小红母鸡说。然后她完成了。

The little red hen returned from the mill carrying a small bag of fine white flour. 

小红母鸡从磨房回来，背着一小袋面粉。

“who will make a cake from this fine white flour? ”the little red hen asked.

这是面粉，谁愿意用这些面粉做一个蛋糕？小红母鸡问到。

“Not I.” said the cat.

“我不干。”猫说

“Not I.” said the dog.

“我不干。”狗说

“Not I.” said the mouse.

“我不干。”老鼠说

“Then I will.”said the little red Hen.And she did.

'好吧，那么我来干！'小红母鸡说。然后她成功了。

She gathered sticks and made a fire in the stove. 

她找来木棍，在炉子里生火。

Then she took milk and sugar and eggs and butter and mixed them in the big bowl with the fine white flour.

然后她将牛奶，糖，鸡蛋和黄油，然后把它们和在盛有面粉的大碗里。

When the oven was hot she poured ,the cake batter into a shinning pan and put it in the oven.

当炉子热的时候他把蛋糕面糊倒进闪亮的平底锅，然后把锅放在烤箱里

Soon a delicious smell filled the cosy little house.

一会儿，一股香味就弥漫在这个温暖的小屋子里。

The cat got off the soft couch and strolled into the kitchen.

小猫离开了软沙发，逛到了厨房。

The dog got up from the sunny back porch and came into the kitchen.

那只狗从阳光灿烂的后廊下爬进了厨房

The mouse jumped down from the warm chair and scampered into the kitchen.

老鼠从暖和的椅子上跳了下来，蹦蹦跳跳来到了厨房。

“Who will eat the cake?”asked the little red hen。

“谁要吃蛋糕？”小红母鸡问到。

“I will!”cried the cat.

'我要！'小猫喊道。

“I will!”cried the dog.

'我要！'小狗喊道。

“I will!”cried the mouse.

'我要！'小老鼠喊道。

But the little red hen said，

“ All by myself, 

I planted the wheat,

I tended the wheat,

I cut the wheat,

I took the wheat to the mill to be ground into flour.

但是小红母鸡说到“所有的事情都是我一人做的，我种麦子，照料麦子，割麦子，我把麦子带到磨房磨成面粉。”

All by myself,

I gathered the sticks,

I built the fire, 

I mixed the cake. And all by myself. 

所有的事情都是我一人做的，我找来木柴，我生的火，我做的蛋糕。

I’m going to eat it!

所以所有的蛋糕都应该由我来吃！

And so she did to the very last crumb.

她也这样做了，吃了整个蛋糕甚至连一点屑也没剩。

After that,

从此以后，

Whenver there was work to be done, the little red hen had three very eager helpers.

无论小红母鸡在干什么活，总会有三个非常愿意帮忙的人。
