范曾，字十翼，别署抱冲斋主，江苏南通人，1938年生于书香之家，自幼即钻研历史、文学和绘画。

1955年考入南开大学历史系。

1957年转入中央美术学院美术史系，研究中国美术史和绘画理论，半年后转入中国画系，受教于吴作人、叶浅予、李苦禅、李可染诸师。1963年毕业后分配在中国历史博物馆创作组工作，随沈从文编绘中国历代服饰资料，并临摹中国古代优秀绘画作品多件 。
Transferred to the Central Academy of Fine Arts, Art History Department in 1957 , of Chinese art history and painting theory , half a year later transferred to the Department of Chinese painting , taught by Wu Zuoren , Ye Qianyu, Li Yan , Li Keran and Zhu Shi .
