so that 既可以引导目的状语从句，也可以引导结果状语从句；而so …that只引导表示结果的状语从句。 一、so that 引导目的状语从句。 1．so that 引导的目的状语从句，作“以便”、“为的是”解，从句中通常用may(might)或can(could)。例如： We learn English so that we may get more knowledge. 我们学英语为的是获得更多的知识。 They got up early so that they could catch the first bus. 他们早起，以便能赶上第一班公共汽车。 如果so that 引出的从句为否定结构，则其谓语多用should + v., 此时，so that 常译为“免得”或“以免”。例如： He looked down so that she should not see his eyes. 他朝下望着，免得她看到他的眼睛。 2．当so that 从句和主句的主语一致时，可用in order to 或不定式短语替换从句的开始部分，其意义基本不变。例如： They got up early so that they could catch the first bus. →They got up early in order to catch the first bus. →They got up early to catch the first bus. 二、so that 和so …that 引导的表示结果的状语从句。 1．so that 引导的表示结果的状语从句作“因此”、“以致”、“所以”解。so that 与so …that 的意思相近，但后者含有表示程度的意思，而前者却没有。例如： He spoke clearly, so that everybody understood him. 他讲话讲得很清楚，所以大家都听懂了。 2．so…that 引导的结果状语从句中，so…that 意为“如此……以致”。so 是副词，用以修饰其后的形容词或副词，说明其程度的大小。 so…that句型中的that 在口语中常可以省去，其意思不变。例如： The story was so funny it made everybody laugh. 这故事太滑稽了，把大家都逗笑了。 so…that 句型中的“so+形容词（副词）”可以提至句首，以加强语气，但要注意用倒装语序。例如： So bright was the moon that the flowers were bright as by day. 在如此明亮的月光下，花儿就象白天一样鲜艳。 三、so that一道的目的状语从句和结果状语从句的大致区别。 1．so that 引导的目的状语从句表示一种尚非事实的目的，往往表示一种愿望，有虚拟的含义，所以从句中常用may、might、should、would、can、could 等情态动词。而so that引导的结果状语从句中不存在虚拟含义，一般不用上述情态动词，即便用了情态动词，也主要表示事实。试比较： I’m going to take an early bus so that I may get there in time. (目的) I took an early bus, so that I could get there in time. (结果) 2．就so that 的位置而言，引导目的状语从句时通常放在一起而不分开；引导结果状语从句时，看实际情况而定，有的放在一起，有的却分开，采取so…that的形式。例如： He studies hard so that he can pass the exam.(引导目的状语从句) 他努力学习以便考试及格。 He climbed higher so that he looked farther.(引导结果状语从句) 他爬得更高，结果也看得更远。 It was so hot that all of us slept outside last night. (引导结果状语从句) 天气那么热，我们大家昨晚走在外面睡觉。 3. 从标点符号的使用情况看，so that引导的结果状语从句多数在从句前使用逗号，而其引导目的状语从句前不用标点符号。
