Do pockets seem complicated? They aren’t! You can easily add pockets to garments that have side seams (like skirts and jackets). You can even add them to existing garments with side seams. All you have to do is open up a space big enough for the pocket pieces (printable below) and insert according to the rest of this tutorial.
Supplies
The PatternPrint this Pocket Pattern and cut two for each pocket you want to make.
The Process
Cut out two pocket pieces for each pocket. You’ll likely want to use a lighter-weight fabric than what your garment is made of. Pin the pocket pieces right-sides together on the fabric. One pocket piece on each piece of fabric. Stitch the pocket at whatever your seam allowance for the garment is. Press the pocket outward. Pin the two pieces together, matching the garment pieces and the pocket pieces. Stitch the side seams. When you get to the pocket, stitch down past the top of the pocket the width of your seam allowance. Put your needle down and pivot the fabric so you can now sew the pocket. When you get done sewing around the pocket, stitch out to the seam allowance on the garment and pivot again. Finish stitching the seam of the garment. Finish the seam of your garment as desired. I just pressed open here. From the front, it will look like this. Of course, if you match the pocket fabric to your garment, it will be less likely to show. Also feel free to understitch this seam before sewing the garment pieces together. This will help the pocket to turn under more. I think it’s fine just like this, though.
