  Undergraduate Admissions

  Apply in Three Steps

To apply to study at Berklee Boston as an undergraduate student:

Submit your online application at apply.berklee.edu, accompanied by a $150 (nonrefundable) application fee.

Complete a live audition and interview. Select your preferred location within the application form, and we’ll send you an invitation as audition sites and dates are confirmed. Check our Audition and Interview Dates page for the latest scheduling updates.

Submit supporting materials, including an official, up-to-date academic transcript or GED.

Once you have completed these steps, we will evaluate your potential to reach your goals with the benefit of a Berklee education.

  Audition and Interview

Berklee's unique audition and interview experience is an integral part of how we select our entering class. We design it to help you show your strengths and to help us assess your talent and potential to succeed in our dynamic environment. It's a required part of the admissions review, and allows us to consider you for scholarships.

Although there is a general format for the audition and interview, each experience is unique—just like you.

We strongly encourage you to visit Berklee's campus in Boston to participate in the audition and interview; tour our facilities; and meet with faculty, students, and staff.

If you'd like to get better prepared for applying or going to Berklee, enroll in a free online course.

  Your Audition

The audition will be approximately 15 minutes long and may consist of the following parts:

  a prepared piece of your choice;

  an improvisation over a harmonic vamp, simple-form blues, or standard tune;

  a reading selection; and/or

melodic, harmonic, and rhythmic ear training exercises.

At the discretion of each audition team, a jam with the faculty and/or technical exercises might be part of your audition. Please refer to the audition checklist for further details about each component of the audition.

We recognize that it is common for applicants to have imbalances in their playing abilities, and we realize that applicants may not have advanced skills in improvisation, reading, or ear training. In fact, this is exactly why you might apply to attend Berklee: to develop your skills in these and other areas. Because we take a holistic approach in our evaluation process, each component of the audition helps the audition team assess your overall abilities as a musician and your potential for success at the college level.

  Interview

Your 15-minute interview with an admissions representative will discuss your goals and aspirations, and what you will bring to Berklee. The board of admissions encourages applicants to share their creative work.

To help you prepare for an in-depth discussion, please consider the following questions in preparation for your interview:

  What is your practice routine?

What are the qualities of a successful musician?

  What are your musical strengths?

What is your favorite part of being a musician?

  Why go to Berklee?

What career opportunities would you like to take advantage of in the music industry?

What benefits do music theory and instrumental training have in your chosen field of interest?

What inspired you to pursue a career in music?

What has been your most significant achievement so far? What motivates you?

One of the biggest challenges for entering students is time management. How do you currently balance school, music, and other activities?

What has been the biggest challenge in your musical learning and growth? How have you overcome it?

What would you like a press release to say about you as a person? About you as a musician?

In what ways do you feel your talents will enhance the quality of life and music in the Berklee community?

How have your life experiences influenced your musical development?

If you'd like to get better prepared for applying or going to Berklee, enroll in a free online course.

Instead of bringing supplemental material to your interview, please provide a link to YouTube, MySpace, or a personal website when you submit your application.

  Supporting Materials

The academic credentials and supporting materials that you are required to provide as part of your application are based upon your unique education background. Our audition and interview process provides us with a wealth of information to assess each applicant's musical aptitude and ability to succeed at Berklee.

Berklee does not require SAT or ACT scores, but you may choose to include your test scores if they are an area of strength.

While not required, any other supplemental materials, such as samples of your creative work, character references, or resumés, are welcome.

All supporting materials must be postmarked on or before the posted deadline date for the semester you are applying to begin attending Berklee.

If you'd like to get better prepared for applying or going to Berklee, enroll in a free online course.

You must submit official, up-to-date academic transcripts or GEDs.

If you who have college/university credits at another institution, you must also submit an official transcript.

All documents must be submitted in English.

  Transfer Students

You must submit transcripts of all completed college/university level work as well as a copy of your high school diploma as evidence of graduation.

Transfer credit may be awarded for most liberal arts courses (with grades of at least a “C” or 2.0) from an accredited institution.

High school transcripts are not required if you have earned more than 24 credits of college-level academic course work.

  TOEFL Requirements

If you are applying to the degree program and your first language is not English, you are required to submit a PTE Academic, a TOEFL or IELTS score to complete their application for admission. We recommend a PTE Academic score of 48, a TOEFL IBT score of 72 or higher, or a IELTS score of 6 or higher.
