Should Children Be Allowed to Get Bored

Children need time to stand and stareThey should be allowed to get bored so that they can develop their ability to be creative

Children are expected by their parents to be reading a textbook all the timeHoweverresearch shows that it may hamper the development of their imaginationwhile boredom can give them opportunities to develop creativity

Boredom is often linked with lonelinessbut a writer named Meera Syal said boredom had helped here in developing her mindShe told researchers about her childhoodHaving few things to doSyal often talked with her neighborsShe also tried to do things like learning to bake cakes"But importantlyI thought and wrote a lotbecause I was bored"Syal saidShe kept a diaryfilling here time with short stories and poems she made up

Grayson Perryan artistgrew up in a family with little moneyHe enjoyed himself by making up storiesdrawing pictures for his stories and reading many books in the libraryBored but freehe spent hours looking out of the windowwatching the changing clouds and seasonsPerry filled up his free time with what he likedHe became creativebecause he could think freely

DrBelton is an expert on the effects of emotions on learning"Boredom could be an uncomfortable feeling"she said"But some young people cannot deal with that boredom creativelySo sometimes they may break a classroom windowor drive a car out for a mad race"

Usuallywhen children have nothing to dothey would turn on the TVthe computeror the phoneTheir time on these things has increasedyet they need to have time to think about their experiences through play or just watching the world around them

It is this kind of thinking that can insp ire the imaginationOn the other handthe TV or phone may cut short the thinking processThat can be harmful to the development of creativity"For developing the ability to be creative"DrBelton advised"perhaps we need to stand and stareand stay offline from time to time"

She said"Surie's in the corner because she's not been very goodShe didn't listen to a word I said or do the things she should"In the corner I saw her baby doll all dressed in pinkIt was obvious she'd been put there to sit alone and think

My daughter continued her"conversation"as I sat down on the floorShe said"I'm all fed upI just don't know what to do with her anymoreShe  cries whenever I have to work and wants to play gamestooShe never lets me do the things that I just have to doShe tries to help me with the dishesbut her arms just cannot reach and she doesn't know how to fold towelsI don't have the energy to teachI have a lot of work to do and a big house to keep cleanI don't have the time to sit and playDon't you know what I mean"

And that day I thought a lot about making some changes in my lifeas I listened to her innocent(天真的)words that cut me like a knifeI hadn't been paying enough attention to my most dear

But how my attitude has changedbecausein my heartI realize I've seen the world in a different light through my little darling's eyesSolet the cobwebs(蜘蛛网)have the corners and the dust bunny rabbit rule the floorI'm not going to worry about keeping up with them anymore

I'm going to fill the house with memories of a child and her motherfor we have only one childhoodand we will never get another
