The prisoner is still under examination (=being examined). 囚犯仍在受审。

3. 表示“考试”，还需注意以下几点:

(1) 表示参加考试，通常用动词 take, sit (for)，enter (for) 等；表示通过考试或考试及格，通常用动词 pass； 表示考试没通过或没及格，通常用动词 fail (in)。如：

About 500 students took [sat, sat for] the examination. 大约有五百学生参加了考试。

Of those who took the exam, only thirty percent passed. 参加考试的人中间，只有百分之三十的人通过了。

Both of them failed (in) the examination. 他们俩人考试都没有及格。

注：“参加考试”可用动词 take, 但不用 take part in。如：

不说：I didn’t take part in the examination.

(2) 表示某一方面的考试，可直接用名词用定语，也可在其后接介词 in。如：a maths examination(数学考试)，an examination in chemistry(化学考试)

(3) “高考”或“大学入学考试”

◆examine v.

1. 表示“检查”，可以指一般性检查也可指医生为病人检查，可用于人也可用于物。如：

Examine the machine carefully. 仔细检查机器。

My bags were examined when I entered the country. 入境时我的提包被检查了。

The doctor examined the patient carefully. 医生对病人作了仔细检查。

2. 用于 examine sb on (in) sth, 用介词 in 通常指在某一学科方面进行测试，用介词 on 通常指在某一问题上进行测试。如：

He examined the students in English (Grammar). 他测试学生的英语(语法)。

I’ll examine you on the work you have done. 我将对所做的工作进行测验。

注意以下两句同义:

老师测试了学生的化学。

正：The teacher examined the students in Chemistry.

正：The teacher examined the students on their knowledge of Chemistry.

◆example n.

1. 有两个主要意义：例子；榜样。

(1) 表示给某人举例，一般用动词 give。如：

Give me an example of what you mean. 给我举个例子说明你的意思。

You’ve said there are several suitable machines to do this job; can you give us any examples? 你说有几种适合的机器可以做这项工作，你能给我们举几个例子吗?

(2) 表示给某人树立榜样，一般用 set, 可带双宾语，若双宾语易位，通常用介词 to。如：

他给我们树立了一个好榜样。

正：He set us a good example.

正：He set a good example to us.

类似下列情况也通常用介词 to。如：

He was an example to them. 他是他们的榜样。

His bravery should be an example to all of us. 他的勇敢应该成为我们大家学习的榜样。

(3) 表示学习某人的榜样或照某人的样子，通常用动词 follow 或copy。如：

He is a good example for us to follow. 他是我们学习的好榜样。

I’ll show you how to hit the ball and then you must follow [copy] my example. 我先做给你看如何击球，然后你必须照我的示范去做。
