I used to think I was poor. Then they told me I wasn’t poor, I was needy. They told me it was self-defeating to think of myself as needy, I was culturally deprived. Then they told me deprived was a bad image, I was underprivileged. Then they told me underprivileged was overused, I was disadvantaged. I still don’t have a dime, but I have a great vocabulary.
各种事物委婉语,也折射了西方社会和文化的人情世风,如: color minority(=Negro)黑人; memory garden(=cemetery)墓地 My cousins (country cousins) have come. He had a mansion in the country and another little place in town. It was nothing; a pinprick. Beethoven was undoubtedly a difficult pupil for he had a strongly independent mind, and was impatient of accepted rules and convention. She is rather good-looking. He has beena bit poorly since the winter. But I did not expect him to go like this. 间接肯定(litotes):亦称“曲言法”,即用否定的词语,强调其反义(ironical understatement, esp. using a negative to emphasize thecontrary),这种用反说代替正说的双重否定往往能产生委婉的效果,如用not bad代替good, not small代替great等等,如: Her face was not a bad one; it had what they called charm. There is no untroubled place in this troubled world. 用否定之否定的方式(the“not un-” habit)来表达间接肯定,有时确实比直接肯定更为准确、微妙,如用not unkindly, not unnaturally 或not unjustifiably比用kindly, naturally或justifiably较为婉转,且显得有分寸。 One could not be too careful in a new neighborhood. It is a wise man that never makes mistakes. (= The wisest man sometimes makes mistakes.) If a home is happy, it cannot fit too close. I run away.I don’t know how far I didn’t run. There was no knowing at what moment he might not put in an appearance, and whenever he didshow, it was to storm about something. What a busy street, with so many people coming and going. He is apt to lose his temper. Seeing her, I was surprised and delighted. We don’t believe that Chinese isinferior to any other language in the world. I cannot consider the matter as in anyway urgent. It is not our opinion that your proposedcontract is practical. (=We don’t think that…) I don’t think you are right You could have come at a better time. Are you telling me? I know all about it. I know better. Let me catch you at it again. The bikini was the last thing she’d like to wear. He would do anything he was asked to dobut return to his old life. A truly great man is above flattery. 英语有大量的词语以肯定的形式表达否定的意义,如: fail (to come), free from(anxiety), short of(the mark),beyond(belief), above(flattery), dead to (shame), blind to(one’s fault),beneath(notice), escape(someone), removed from (self-interest), too…to…, ratherthan, instead of, keep…from, other(wise) than, more than, absent from, all Greek to等等。 婉转暗示(tactful implication):用含而不露的言辞留下弦外音,有些说法则跳过逻辑层次(leave gaps in the development of a thought),让对方去寻味。 It can be worse. You are late for the last time. Will you be good enough to advise me whether I should accept the invitation? 平易:Please tell me whether I should accept the invitation. In London there reigns a complete absence of really reliable news. 平易:There is no reliable news in London. 用合成介词来代替简单介词,也是“迂回”的明显例子,如: on the grounds of (=because of) in the neighborhood of (=about) despite the fact that(=although) 迂回有时也会造成矫揉造作、累赘冗长的文风,譬如英语的“官样文章”喜欢迂回曲折,装腔作势,因而句式笨拙,词语臃肿,表达凝滞。 The object of this visit is a pooling of knowledge to explore furtherthe possibility of a joint research effort to discover the practicability ofmaking use of this principle to meet a possible future NATO requirement, andshould be viewed in the general context of interdependence. This visit is to find out whether we can together develop thefolding-wing plane for NATO. We had no thought of intruding you uponyour attention and hope you will overlook our offence. Your patronage is cordially invited.
