2015年11月29日，科比发表了这首《亲爱的篮球》，并正式宣布在2015-16赛季结束后退役。

2017年12月19日，洛杉矶湖人队将科比的8号球衣以及24号球衣同时退役，科比也成为NBA历史上第一位同时退役两件球衣的球员。

科比曾说：“如果20年后篮球依旧是我这一生最大的成就，那么说明我失败了。现在我有一个非常非常简单的目标，未来的20年我要比之前的20年变得更加成功，这一直激励着我，这是我动力所在。”
