The Earth

When you stand on the beach and look at the sea, the horizon, or skyline, seems to stretch straight across from left to right for hundreds of kilometers. However, the horizon isn't a straight line. As you look at the far left and right edges of this line, you will notice what seem to be slight curvatures. The reason for these curves is that our earth is shaped like a sphere, or ball.

　　Seen from space, the earth is almost perfectly round and appears to have a smooth surface. The earth is one of many planets in our solar system. However, it is the only planet that has the right conditions for human life. Other planets would be too cold or too hot for humans, or the atmosphere would be too poisonous. The next time you go to the beach, remember that there is no other place like this planet anywhere else in the universe.

译文：

当你站在海滩上望着大海时，地平线似乎是笔直地从左边到右边绵延数百公里。然而地平线并不是直线。当你望着这条线的极左和极右的边缘时，你会注意到它似乎有点弯曲。这是因为地球的形状像个球体。

　　从太空上看，地球几乎完全是圆形的，似乎有非常平滑的表面。地球是我们太阳系中众多的行星之一。然而，它却也是唯一具备适合人类生活条件的行星。其他的行星对人类来说，不是太冷就是太热，或是大气层毒性太强。下次你到海滩时，要记得宇宙中没有一个地方比得上这个星球的。

语法重点

1. 介绍 the reason（理由）作主语的用法：

the reason 作主语，之后若有 be 动词 is 时，应以 that 引导的名词从句作主语补足语，句型如下：

a.The reason（+ 关系副词 why 引导的定语从句）+ is + that 从句

b.The reason（+ 介词 for 引导的介词短语）+ is + that 从句

为什么……的理由就是……

              

例: The reason why John failed the test is that he wasn't prepared for it at all.

= The reason for John's failure to pass the test is that he wasn't prepared for it.

约翰考试不及格的理由就是他根本没有准备。

本课第一段最后一句即采 b 项句构，即：

The reason for these curves is that our earth is shaped like a sphere, or ball.

= The reason why the horizon is not a straight line but a curved line is that our earth is shaped like a sphere, or ball.

为何有这些曲线∕为何地平线并非直线而是曲线，其理由就是我们地球的形状像个球体。

2. 注意：以上以 The reason 作主语的句构中，is 之后均以 that 引导的名词从 句作主语补足语，但是现今许多英美人士均以 because 引导的副词从句作主语补足语，即：

The reason for John's failure to pass the test is because he wasn't prepared for it at all.

The reason why I was late for the meeting is because I was caught in a traffic jam on my way to work.

我开会迟到的理由就是因为我在上班途中碰到交通阻塞。

以上以副词连词 because 引导的副词从句视同副词，原本不可置 be 动词之后作主语补足语，即无下列用法：

Mary is beautifully. (×)

                adv.

→ Mary is beautiful. (○)

                     adj.

玛丽很美。 

或:  Mary is a beauty. (○)

                        n.

玛丽是个大美人。

不过，连我们在中文中也会说出下列的句子：

他辞职的理由是因为他厌倦了这份工作。

难怪英美人士也会说出这样的句子：

The reason for his resignation is because he was sick and tired of this job.

不过，诸多语法家仍主张以 that 取代 because 较合乎语法。
