Preface

历史常常被谓之一面镜子，倘若这面镜子有瑕疵的话会映射到我们脸上吗？

History is often known as a mirror. If the mirror has flaws on it, will they be mapped onto our faces?

据说，伦敦旧日出版的《上海》里说：“二十世纪二三十年代，上海成为传奇都市，环球航行如果没有到过上海便不能算完”。与此同时，上海对世界无谓的开怀也让世界各地的人与物以及不同的文化聚集于此，并逐而由此扩散到中国各地，也使得上海成为了繁华城市代表的中心之地。

According to Shanghai, an early-time London-based publication, during the 1920’s and 1930’s, Shanghai became a legendary city. A circumnavigation was not considered perfect without visiting Shanghai. Meanwhile, the complete openness of Shanghai at that time also gathered different peoples and cultures from all around the world, and right from there, they gradually moved into other parts of China. All this has rendered Shanghai a representative of prosperous cities.

旧上海也吸引过许多文化精英、那些世界级的文化艺术大家——泰戈尔、里姆斯基、杜威、卓别林等也相继来到号称“东方的巴黎”，以及所谓的十里洋场见识一下。当然，他们也会顺便在此展现一下个人才华之后，向众人挥挥帽子离去、、、留洋归国的才子们同样会用他们所学的知识技能进一步教化那些落伍的国人。在新旧交替，文化碰撞的过程中，守旧的文人们、破旧的文化斗士们、那些流亡的俄国人、犹太人、当然还有英国人，法国人，日本人，印度人以及还有抱着不同目的来到上海滩闯荡的各色人等，他们（她）相互遭遇共同汇演了那个年代的风流。

Many cultural elites and world-class cultural masters, such as Tagore, Rimsky, Dewey, and Chaplin, had also been attracted to Shanghai, known then as 'Paris of the East' and 'a metropolis infested with foreign adventurers'. Of course, they would take this opportunity to show their personal talents before they waved the city goodbye. Similarly, Chinese students who studied abroad would also try to educate their backward compatriots with what they had learned overseas. In the course of cultural collisions and the alternation between the old and new, the old-fashioned literati, archaic cultural fighters, exiled Russians, Jews, and needless to say, Britons, Frenchmen, Japanese, Indians, and others who rushed to Shanghai for different purposes encountered here and contributed to the city’s characteristic development.

历史轮进至今，上海依旧那样妩媚，虽然还可以依靠回忆度日，但缺了点那时的魅力（当然这个魅力不能或缺冒险）。即便那时的魅力是拿来的，但是生活的勇气犹在，奋斗的激情尚存。

Today, Shanghai is still as beautiful as it has always been, though somewhat lacking in the charm of the past. (Of course, this charm won’t exist without adventures) Even though that charm was not totally self-made, the courage and passion for a better life were still alive.

上海文化发展的现状也反映了文化人的人格与修养。其中的困境，我想，除了学习之外，还需要用智慧与勇气来弥补。或者说，这种智慧与勇气是排除了守旧与媚外的缠绕，获得了继承与发展的风流。

The status quo of Shanghai's cultural development also reflects the personality and cultivation of its literati. The dilemma, I think, needs to be overcome not only by learning, but also by wisdom and courage. In other words, this kind of wisdom and courage is developed on the basis of inheritance and is free from the entanglement of conservativism and foreign country worship.

“风流”上海抽象展览，汇聚了上海老中青最具代表性的抽象艺术家们的精品力作，展览试图在当今文化发展的大环境下，通过各自不同的抽象艺术样态来彰显艺术家们在当今上海乃至中国与全球艺术领域无法替代的艺术作用。虽然，抽象一词已经百年的历史，然而，在没有其它合适表述词的情况下，作品的拓展性价值恐怕是至关重要的。

The art exhibition brings together the masterpieces of Shanghai artists. Against the grand settings of global cultural development, using different abstract art forms, it attempts to highlight the unreplaceable role of these artists in today’s Shanghai, the whole China, and even the world. Although the term “abstract” has existed for over a hundred years, the extensive value of the works might remain crucial in the absence of other appropriate words to articulate.

“风流”是一种态度，这种态度是冒险与矜重的合流，祂既是对那些历史纠结之物的智慧超越，也是对不同历史阶段做出过文化作用的风流大家们的一种崇高致敬！

'Unrestrained' is an attitude that combines adventure and elegance. It is a wisdom that transcends the historical entanglements, and a lofty tribute to all the masters who have played a role in different historical stages.

展览背景 Background of the exhibition

上海是中国抽象艺术的发源地，也是中国抽象艺术之都。上海的抽象艺术家群体，四十年来不懈的坚守抽象艺术，独立追求，和而不同，形成了良性互动的抽象文化生态。

Shanghai is the birth place and capital of abstract art in China. The abstract artists in Shanghai as a group have been engaged in abstract art for forty years. They have pursued independence and harmony in diversity, forming an abstract cultural ecosystem featuring benign interaction.

随着社会的不断发展与人们审美认知的进步，抽象艺术与都市文明相得益彰，开放的社会形态与国际视野，以及上海人自我、独立而执着的文化性格，使得在这里集结并孕育出众多具有影响力的抽象艺术家及其成果。而不断思考与探索抽象艺术与历史文化的关系以及在当下的意义，则无疑是上海的抽象艺术家们正在共同探索的课题。

With continuous social development and the improvement of people's aesthetic cognition, abstract art and urban civilization have brought out the best in each other. Shanghai as an open society with international visions, as well as the independent and tenacious cultural character of its citizens, have brought together and given birth to many influential abstract artists with outstanding achievements. The relationship between abstract art, culture, and history and the significance of this relationship in the modern age have been a matter of joint concern for abstract artists in Shanghai.

面对正在兴起的中国抽象艺术热潮，作为先行者的上海抽象，如何将中国5000年的抽象文明融合西方100年的抽象主义现象，促进东方艺术意识、本土学术思维和探索精神，创作出具有海派文化特征的当代东方抽象艺术，肩负起新时代中国文化自信的文化使命，是每一个上海抽象画家共同的心愿，也是创办此次展览的价值和意义。

Against the emerging abstract art boom in China, Shanghai, the pioneer in Chinese abstract art, needs to take the responsibility of boosting Oriental art awareness and local academic thinking and exploration spirit by integrating the 5,000 years of abstract culture in China with the 100 years of abstract phenomena in the West, so as to create a contemporary abstract art with Shanghai characteristics. This is a common wish of every Shanghai abstract painter and it also demonstrates the value and significance of this exhibition.

本次展览也是继2006年“上海抽象艺术展”之后酝酿时间最久，参展画家最多、绘画形式最广，学术气氛最浓的一次抽象艺术大展。参展画家老中青三代，既有上世纪80年代早期就开始抽象艺术实践的老画家，也有近20年、30年探索历程的中年画家和近些年在上海抽象画坛暂露头角的青年画家，这些艺术家代表着上海抽象的整体形象，集中展现他们多年来在抽象艺术领域创新、探索、实践的最新成就。上海抽象，将以此为号，寻根中华5000年抽象艺术之源，魂系百年海派文化之脉，吹响海派抽象向世界致敬的集结号。

This is also the most comprehensive abstract art exhibition since “Shanghai Abstract Art Exhibition” in 2006. It will bring together three generations of painters, including older painters who have practiced abstract art in early 1980's, middle-aged painters with 20 to 30 years of painting experience, and younger painters who have made their names in Shanghai in recent years. Together, they constitute the overall image of Shanghai abstract art. This exhibition, which focuses on demonstrating these painters’ latest achievements, will mark the start of seeking the root of abstract art in China and showcase Shanghai-style abstract art to the rest of the world.
