Welcome to Survival English! I’m your host, Jordon.

National parks, museums, monuments – when you visit a foreign country, these are the things you don’t want to miss. But have you ever thought of visiting a public library?

What public libraries offer

In the US, public libraries offer English books of all topics for readers of all levels. Popular book series such as Harry Potter, classics like To Kill a Mockingbird and bestsellers like The Hunger Games, can all be found at a public library – for free!

But you don’t have to be a bookworm to enjoy your time at a library. There are lots of other great free resources to use at your convenience, such as …

Public computers and limited, free internet access

Magazines, newspapers and journals

Multimedia, such as audio books, CDs and DVDs

Research and reference materials, such as encyclopedias and online databases

Reading and study areas

Printing and copying machines

Private study and meeting rooms

公用计算机和有限额的免费网络接入服务;

杂志、报纸和文摘;

多媒体服务,如有声书、CD和DVD光盘;

研究和参考材料,如百科全书和网络数据库;

阅读和学习专区;

打印复印设备;

Depending on the needs of the local community, some libraries might also have books and multimedia in other languages, including Spanish and Chinese. Public libraries also offer free programs and activities, such as book clubs, book sales and after-school programs.

How to get a library card in the US

That’s great. But you’re probably wondering, “As a foreign visitor, how can I get into a library?” Believe it or not, in the US, most libraries are open to anyone, including foreign guests like you. You can just walk in and enjoy your time there. But you might need a library card to borrow books or use a computer.

Most public libraries only give you a library card if you have a local address. So here’s what you’ll probably need to get a library card:

Proof of local address, such as a phone bill or a rental lease

Two types of photo ID. For example, a passport and driver’s license.

Of course, kids and teenagers can’t get a library card without permission from their parents. So plan to visit the library with your mom or dad.

Rules for borrowing from a library

Before you begin your library adventure, make sure to read the rules for borrowing. If you forget to return a book, you might have to pay a late fee. However, a late fee will usually not be more than the cost of the book.

Here are some questions you might want to ask a librarian:

How long can I check out a book / audio book / DVD?

How many books can I check out at once?

What are the late fees?

What happens if I lose or damage a book?

Can I borrow digital books?

So how to find what you’re looking for? It’s easy! Most libraries in the US use computer catalogues to search for books. Just type in the title of the book or the author’s name. Then write down the unique book number and go hunting!

If you’re familiar with Chinese libraries, then navigating an American library should be easy. That’s because many libraries in China use “中文图书分类法,” which is based on Dewey Decimal Classification (DDC). The Dewey Decimal System was invented by the American librarian Melville Dewey in 1876. So just like in China, the books in a US public library are divided into 10 main categories, from 000 to 900. Each book has a specific number.

This week I challenge you to make a trip to your local public library. Then come back here and describe your experience. Did you get a library card? Did you check out a book or use a computer? If you don’t live in an English-speaking country, then just visit the English section of your library!

That’s all for this episode of Survival English. See you next time!
