When the man's wife died, their youngest baby was only two. They had six other children — three boys and three girls. They were from 4 to 16.
A few days later, the man's parents said to him, "You can not take care of all these children and work to make a living. We've arranged (安排) for each child with a different uncle and aunt. Your children will live right here in neighborhood, so you can see them anytime ..."
"Thank you all," the man answered. "But I want you to know," he smiled and continued, "if we need any help, we'll let you know."
Over the next few weeks, the man worked with his children. The two elder girls, aged 12 and 10, began to cook and do the housework. The two elder boys, 16 and 14, helped their father with his farming.
But unfortunately, the man developed arthritis (关节炎) and couldn't hold his farm tools. He sold his farm, moved the family to a small town and did a small business. The family was welcomed into the new neighborhood. The man got pleasure from seeing people and serving them. And the children helped him both at home and at work. Their father's pleasure brought them satisfaction, and their father got pleasure from their successes.
The children grew up. Five of the seven went off to college, and then they got married. The children's successes in college were a source of the father's pride.
Finally, the youngest daughter got married. And the man, with his work completed, died. The man's work was a lonely but joyful task of raising his family. Do you know who the man was? He was my father. I was the 16-year-old one, the oldest of the seven.

Even though goldfish aren't the most exciting pets to keep, they make a great start for kids who want to keep a pet, especially young kids. Keeping goldfish is a great choice when parents don't want to have a four-legged pet. Goldfish are fairly easy to take care of.
Kids can have fun taking care of goldfish, but there are a few basics that both parents and kids should know.
First, most goldfish live longer than cats or dogs when they are well taken care of, so we need to take good care of them as long as they live. However, some people just flush (冲洗) their healthy goldfish down the toilet. It is absolutely wrong and sends the wrong message to children.
In terms of feeding your goldfish, follow the introductions on the bag of the food you choose. It is not wise to feed your goldfish with too much food because they will not stop eating though they are full already. Besides, when the excess (过量的) food breaks down in the water, the water will become harder to clean and unhealthier for the fish.
Many parents and kids become real fish lovers after getting a couple of goldfish. Once the whole family or the kids become responsible for taking care of goldfish, maybe a cat or a dog can become a suitable additional member in the family.

31.Which of the following will be a great start if a kid is interested in keeping a pet?

Are you having a hard time striking up conversations with Americans? You might be doing something wrong. Here are some ways that may end a good conversation with an American.
Being strange
Don't follow people around and stare at them without saying anything. If you want to talk to someone, it is best to make a move immediately. Don't think about it — just do it. Try saying, "Hi, how are you?" Make quick eye contact and smile.
Talking about money
Don't ask, "How much did you pay for that coat?" Why? Because Americans avoid talking about money until they feel close to each other. This can be offensive (冒犯的). It is not a proper topic to discuss between strangers, unless you are buying something from someone. Try "That's a great coat! Where did you find it?" instead.
Using too much slang (俚语) or informal speech
Don't say, "Yo, whuzzup my homey?" Why? Because slang is usually used in situations where you already know the person, not the first time you meet. In general, it's better to say, "Hi, how's it going?", an informal but more proper greeting.
Insulting (侮辱) the person
Don't say, "You look so tired!" Why? Telling people they look tired is kind of an insult if you don't know them well. "You look tired" will be considered by many people the same as saying they look terrible. No one wants to look terrible. Try "I like your style!" instead.
If you keep the above ways in mind and avoid them when starting a conversation with Americans, you'll find it much easier to talk with them.

41.What do the underlined words "striking up" in Paragraph 1 mean?

A. Starting.                      B. Changing.

C. Improving.                    D. Ending.

42.According to the second paragraph, what should you do if you want to talk to someone?

A. Think first and speak later.               B. Just stare at him or her.

C. Listen to his or her words carefully.        D. Say something immediately.

43.What does the third paragraph mainly talk about?

A. Don't be offensive when talking with strangers.

B. We can talk about clothes with strangers.

C. We can talk about money with strangers.

D. We shouldn't be too close to each other.

44.What should we do when we're talking to Americans for the first time?

A. Use slang.                     B. Use informal words.

C. Speak kind of formally.          D. Make short eye contact.

45.Which of the following structures describes the relation best among the paragraphs?
