Finder.com.au

Finder.com.au has crunched data from the latest Census to determine Victoria’s capital is home to people from 191 of the world’s 211 countries.

“That’s an impressive 91 percent,” finder.com.au money expert Bessie Hassan said.

“Melbourne’s multiculturalism could be a contributing reason it’s said to be one most liveable cities in the world.”

The UN is comparatively made up of 193 member states.

The finder.com.au research also reveals the 3030 postcode — taking in Point Cook, Werribee, Werribee South, Derrimut, Quandong and Cocoroc — is Melbourne’s most multicultural region.

It’s home to residents born in 148 countries, equating to a 70 per cent of the world’s nations, the data shows.

“Of the near 100,000 people who call postcode 3030 home, 55,000 were born in Australia,” Ms Hassan said.

“This leaves just more than 40,000 people born overseas. Yet in the one area, there’s people from nearly 150 countries.”

Hoppers Crossing-Tarneit-Truganina comes next with people from 138 nations, followed by postcodes 3023 (Burnside, Burnside Heights, Cairnlea, Caroline Springs, Deer Park and Ravenhall) with 136 and 2175 (Bangholme, Dandenong, Dandenong North and Dandenong South) with 134.

Other notable multicultural hot spots are Albion-Sunshine, Noble Park, Albanvale-St Albans-Kings Park, the Sydnenham-Taylors Hill area, Reservoir, the Craigieburn-Roxburgh Park area, Frankston, and Epping.

Finder.com.au’s analysis used the Australian Bureau of Statistics’ 2016 Census data on where people stated they were born, and calculated the percentages based on the assumption there are 211 independent nations in the world.

Ms Hassan said India, China and New Zealand were the top nations represented in Melbourne.

Hocking Stuart Werribee agent Samantha McCarthy said residents from across the globe were pouring into Melbourne’s outer southwest, notably buyers of Lebanese, Indian, Sri Lankan and Chinese backgrounds.

Desirable schools and affordable housing were the major drawcards, along with the opportunity to buy into communities with ties to their cultures.

Ms McCarthy said the influx had enhanced the Point Cook-Werribee-Hoppers Crossing area by opening it up to new cultures, businesses — and “great food”.

German-born Emmi Godau moved to Melbourne with her family in about 1987 and has now settled in one of its most multicultural suburbs: Epping.

“The East and West were still divided in Germany. We wanted to give our children more freedom,” Ms Godau said of her emigration to Australia.

The nurse said she enjoyed living in a diverse suburb: “I meet a great variety of people in my work and social life — from China, Spain, India, Africa.

“It’s a part of Australia I love, having all different cultures living together.”
