'Escapethe corset': South Korean women

rebelagainst strict beauty standards

Dr. Mann

SouthKorean women spend hours each day, and plenty of money each month, makingthemselves look perfect.【

When ChaJi-won decided to throw out all her makeup[cosmetics化妆品] and cuther hair, her mother was the first to tease[irritate/anger] her:“Oh look, I have a son now.”【车智媛决定扔掉她所有的化妆瓶、剪短她的长发时,她妈妈是第一个嘲弄她的人:哇,你看,我有了个小子。

For morethan a decade, starting when she was 12, Cha would meticulously applycosmetics, chasing the narrow definition of beauty that dominatesSouth Korean society. In middle school, she applied foundation to lightenher skin tone, avoiding teachers who would punish her for violating schoolrules.【自十二岁起的十多年来,车智媛都会一丝不苟地涂脂抹粉,以符合风主宰韩国社会的关于美丽的狭隘定义。

Shewatched YouTube make-up tutorials to hone her skills【她通过油管美容教程淬炼自己的技术 and byher early 20s would spend as much as 100,000 won (£70) a month on cosmetics. But amid a wider feminist awakening【女性崛起】 in SouthKorea, Cha has chosen to ditch[abandon/throw away] her makeup, lipstickand dyed blonde hair.

“I feltas if I had been born again,” Cha said. “There’s only so much mental energy aperson has each day, and I used to spend so much of it worrying about being‘pretty’. Now I use that time to read books and exercise.”【车说:我感到获得了新生。” “一个人每天的精力是有限的,但我过去却花了那么多时间来担心美丽的问题。现在我用那些担心的时间来读书和锻炼。

Cha is partof a growing movement in South Korea fighting against unrealistic beautystandards that call for women to spend hours applying makeup and perform skincareregimes that involve 10 steps or more at each end of the day. Among theircomplaints is that women must wake up two hours before work to ensure perfectmakeup, meticulously removing dead skin with peeling gel and steam towelsbefore beginning their regimen.【车是韩国不断发展的运动的一部分,该运动反对不切实际的美容标准,要求女性花费数小时化妆,并在每天结束时进行10步或更多步骤的护肤方案。

Womensick of the laborious routine have started to post videos on socialmedia of destroyed piles of cosmetics with the catch-cry “escape the corset”,likening makeup to the garments that were part of daily women’s garmentsfor years and worked to constrain bodies into a uniform shape.【厌倦了费力程序的女性,已经开始在社交媒体上播放被摧毁的一堆化妆品的视频,其中包括逃避紧身胸衣,将化妆品比作女性服装多年来的日常服装,并努力将身体束缚成统一的形状。】

The trendis part of a larger push against the country’s patriarchal society thathas seen record numbers of women take to the streets to demand greater equalityand fight against issues such as illegal filming and sexual assault.【这一趋势是对该国父权制社会的更大挑战的一部分,该社会已经有破纪录数量的女性走上街头,要求更大的平等,并打击非法拍摄和性侵等问题。】

Themovement is an interesting turn in South Korea, a nation that actively promotesits prowess in cosmetic surgeryas much as a third of youngwomen have gone under the knife – and whose cosmetic brands are coveted aroundthe world with an industry worth about $12.5bn (£9.7bn), according toEuromonitor.【这个运动在韩国是一个有趣的转折,韩国是一个积极推动其在整容手术方面的实力的国家 ——该国多达三分之一的年轻女性挨过刀子(这句其实翻译的不错,haha!)

SouthKorea’s exacting beauty standards are the result of several factors thathave combined to encourage women to aim for pale skin, big eyes, a high nosebridge, skinny legs, cherry-like lips, a small face and a nine-to-one bodyratio, where the body is nine times as long as the face. While every countryhas its own sense of what is ideal, South Korea’s strong conformist streak hasled to millions striving to achieve the same look.【韩国严格的美容标准是几个因素造成的结果,这些因素共同促使女性瞄准苍白皙皮肤,大大的眼睛,高高的鼻梁,瘦瘦的双腿,樱桃般的嘴唇,小小的脸庞和九对一的身体比例,也就是说身体的长度应该是脸的九倍。

But overthe past few months, the tide has started to turn, with thousands ofposts on social media showing women smashing their cosmetics as a way of rejectingmainstream ideas of beauty. One theme running through the movementis the idea of a beauty regimen as a form of labour, one that only women areexpected to perform and for which they are in no way compensated.(最后这句话不容易翻译。)

In onevideo two women dumpthrow/discard/pour倾倒;反倾销法:anti-dumpinglaw eye shadow, foundation, blush and nailpolish onto a white sheet, creating a Jackson Pollock-style canvas. “I wasembarrassed to go outside without this in the past,” one of the women says. “Theycan’t have any power over me when it’s so easy to break them.【在一个视频中,两名女性将眼影、粉底、腮红和指甲油倾倒在白色床单上,创造出杰克逊波洛克风格的帆布。在过去,不用这些化妆出门,我会觉得没脸见人,其中一位女士说。当它们可以轻易被打破时,它们就没法控制我了。(语言学习也是这样,所以学习者不应该再说“MyEnglish is poor.”)】

Inanother post on Twitter one woman remarks: “I can’t believe I wore this on myface.”

Whilethere are currently no statistics showing a drop in cosmetic sales, anecdotalevidence suggests the movement is hitting bottom lines. An anonymousofficial at a top South Korean cosmetics retailer was anxious about the newtrend and planned to focus on increasing sales to menThey willprey on the males., according to local media.Another makeup company employee said firms were afraid to even admit themovement could be affecting them.【虽然目前没有统计数据显示化妆品销售下降,但坊间证据表明该运动正在触底(“hitbottom line”翻译成触底是值得争议的,也许翻译成即将抵达临界点更符合上下文,因为文章的意思是说,这种运动似乎会对化妆品销售产生不良影响,所以要采用“bottomline”众多释义中的这一个:the deciding or crucial factor。)。

Rejectingmakeup is only part of the campaign against prevailing beauty standards.A Korean news anchor at one of the country’s main televisions stationssparked a flurry of debate in May when she became the first woman to wearglasses on air.

Separately,Jiwon Park started an Instagram account last year to promote body positivityand fight back against the narrow definition of beauty in South Korea.

Themovement doesn’t only aim to challenge the sexual objectification of women, but also change the status of women as subordinate to men,” said LeeNa-Young, a women’s studies professor at Chung-Ang University in Seoul. “As aresult, we’re not only seeing a change in makeup and cosmetics but alsothe way women dress.”

“These women are experiencing liberation, and once they experience that, there’s nogoing back.这些女性正在经历解放,一旦她们体验到这一点,就一发不可收拾。(最后这一句翻译的颇为不错,HIA!HIA!
