What is Insomnia and How to Cope with that?

“It's about 3.20am. I know this not because I've checked the clock recently – I just know it's about 3.20am. Let's add it up: went to bed at 10.30pm, read for a bit, lights out, turned over a few dozen times (midnight), meditated for half an hour (12.45am), tried again,turning and turning (1.45am), turned the pillows over to find the cool side(2.15am), put pyjamas on (2.45am), turned over on to my front to try and squash myself to sleep, tried sitting up, kneeling, and – in a moment of absurdity – tried going to sleep standing up. So that would make it past 3am”

This story might be some of our story in trying to fall asleep every single night.When you find a doctor, they will say you have insomnia. What is Insomnia and How to cope with That?

Insomnia is defined in the fifth edition of the Diagnostic and statistical manual of mental disorders (DSM-5) as difficulty getting to sleep, staying asleep or having non-restorative sleep despite having adequate opportunity for sleep,together with associated impairment of daytime functioning, with symptoms being present for at least 4 weeks. Having a sleep experience that does not meet our expectation, such as with some transient awakenings but with good daytime functioning, does not constitute insomnia.Insomnia can be divided into acute and chronic insomnia. Acute insomnia is short-term insomnia that causes by stress at work, family pressure or atraumatic event. Chronic insomnia lasts for a month or longer, this is can caused by secondary causes such as certain medical conditions, medicines, other sleep disorders and caffeine, tobacco, and alcohol consumption.

Common pattern of Insomnia according to TCM

  • Stress and depression resulting in Liver Qi Stagnation. Long term liver Qi Stagnation can turn to fire. The fire rises to disturb the heart and spirit and the person can not relax and sleep

  • A diet of junk food will affect the stomach and the digestive system. In the earliest TCM book Huang Di Nei Jing, it is said ‘if the stomach is not settled a person can not sleep peacefully

  • Aweak body constitution or long-term chronic illness both resulting in adeficiency of kidney yin. The water of kidney cannot nourish the brain and there can be spleen deficiency, and what is known as deficiency of the Heart Blood. Food becomes hard to digest and a lack of nutrients results, in turn failing to nourish the heart. Women sometimes experience this condition after labor and elderly people can be prone to id. Insomnia often only lasts a few days or weeks. Long-term insomnia can go on indefinitely unless the cause can be identified and treated

HOW INSOMNIA CAN BE TREATED?

Treatments for insomnia must be including lifestyle changes and good sleep habits,these often help relieve acute (short-term) insomnia. These changes might make it easier for you to fall asleep and stay asleep. Also another safe option is acupuncture.
