At the centre of the Quay is a 29-meter tall artwork titled Spanda by internationally-renowned artist Christian de Vietri. Its design represents ripples and links the Swan River, land and sky

Elizabeth Quay, by ARM Architecture and TCL (Taylor Cullity Lethlean), brought the Swan River to the Perth CBD creating a vibrant waterfront precinct

TCL has worked in collaboration with ARM Architecture on the design and documentation of Perth’s new waterfront—Elizabeth Quay.

The design of Elizabeth Quay achieves the objective of re-establishing the historic connection between the City and the Swan River by returning the existing City grid towards the water and creating an inlet that brings water back to the city’s doorstep. The large inlet surrounded by a split level promenade offers a diverse mix of urban sub-spaces allowing differing groups to engage in an assortment of activities including recreation, dining, play, entertainment and relaxation.

New development sites and supporting street networks frame the inlet and will house future buildings, including residential, retail, commercial and hotel developments.

The promenade is accessible via stairs, inclined walkways and seating terraces which provide public access between the upper and lower levels. A strong def i nitive ribbon of trees fl anks the upper terrace and marks the point of transition to the lower promenade. The promenades is paved with two stone types of contrasting colours that follow a dynamic paving pattern.

The edge is made from a series of components—a steel and urban art edge element with integrated lighting and mesh “splash decks”. The continuously changing direction of the edge is driven from the generative patterning of the promenade. The urban art edge element provides a solid edge to the promenade, allowing crowds to occupy the promenade and feel secure that they will not fall into the water.

The landing forms the edge to the entire northern side of the waterfront inlet. It is inspired by the idea of the original edge of the Swan River,an undulating and organic experience offering the opportunity to get right down to the water’s edge, which is decorated by boat moorings.

Behind these timber terraces is a dynamic event space, able to accommodate a range of public events including an outdoor cinema, temporary sporting exhibitions, performance tents, markets and various musical concerts.

A new island has been created by excavating a section of land from the mainland. The island is designed to be an engaging landscape experience for all visitors, a unique place to capture the youthful imagination of all, where opportunities to access and engage with the water distinguishes the island from the promenade.

Specialist lighting illuminates the Quay at night, allowing for 24/7 activation of the space

The island is planted with a wide array of plants indigenous to the South-west of Western Australia, a region of great floral diversity and international interest. This botanical tribute to the state encourages native wildlife like the swans, which inhabit the river to the island.

Mature trees give the island immediate impact; not only within The island itself, but visually from the promenade the canopies provide a generous volume of green amenity for the surrounding development. Meandering paths allow visitors to experience an intimacy within the planting and the landscape design in collaboration with Paul Thompson. Set amongst flowering gardens beds, is the Florence Hummerston kiosk, a federation arts and crafts style building, originally constructed in 1927. The kiosk functions as a cafe and include public, universally accessible toilets for all island visitors. A substantial paved alfresco dining space surrounds the building, wrapping the kiosk in the sweeping island pattern.

Views back to the promenade and city skyline can be experienced at the high points from the bridge landing and at the northern part of the island.

BHP Water Park has a huge iconic water feature design collaboratively with JML Barcelona. The park acts as an entry point to the Quay, for people entering from the Elizabeth Quay train station.

Here people are invited to meet, gather and enjoy the park framed by figs trees and punctuated by tall palms with an understory of ‘paradise planting’. A terraced seating edge surrounds the water feature which represents recurring wet and dry lakes in the Western Australian landscape. Programmable jets, misters and lighting activate the water feature transforming the space into a theatrical play element for people of all ages.

Elizabeth Quay Redevelopment is a symbol of Perth’s coming of age as a lively and diverse international centre of living, culture, creativity, learning, entertainment and business.
