'How much do you earn?' It's the question we all want to ask when meeting classmates and friends. It's human nature that we sometimes can't help comparing our wages to other people. But things are not always what they seem.

Recently, the '2019 Chinese Wage Report' released by Tencent's financial platforms have caught the attention of the public, and some of its figures provide a shocking moment for contemplation.

'No way! I'm one of the 78 percent!'

The normal rule is the longer you've worked: the higher your salary.

However, only 22 percent of respondents who have worked for at least 10 years, earn more than 10,000 yuan a month.

This indicates that work experience is not the only factor affecting wage level. In order to get a high salary, other factors such as economic environment, location and what industry you're in are also important.

How the top cities perform

Shanghai, Beijing, and Shenzhen are the top 3 cities for high-income groups, they are closely followed by Nanjing, Hangzhou and Guangzhou in 4th to 6th places.

The bulk of people in Shanghai, Beijing, Shenzhen, Guangzhou, and Hangzhou earn 5,000 to 8,000 yuan a month, with 29, 24, 30, 29 and 34 percent of the total interviewees earning that much, in each of the five respective cities.

The biggest group for Nanjing earns between 3,000 and 5,000 yuan, or 28 percent of all interviewees in the city.

Does your salary satisfy you?

Want a high salary? Work in the internet industry.

That's what the figures show, with internet employees having the highest salaries among all industries. Employees in the real estate and financial markets are also relatively well paid compared to others.

However, over 60 percent of the respondents say they are not satisfied with their salaries. As such, 70 percent of all respondents say they are considering job-hopping to find a job with a higher income.

More than half of the respondents spend less than 20 percent of their wages on financial management. They say that's mainly because they lack financial planning skills or relevant knowledge.

Netizens say......

By Wednesday morning, the topic 'nearly 80 percent of adults with more than 10 years of work experience earn less than 10,000 yuan per month' had been read 240 million times and discussed 27,000 times.

While some netizens criticized the report for spreading anxiety, some shared their wages online, providing references to others.

'I was born after 1995 and just graduated this year. My monthly salary is about 7,000 yuan, and I do not own an apartment or a car myself, nor do I have any savings. I just find it hard to save money. I guess all my money has flown away.'

'I was born in 1997 and my average monthly salary is about 10,000 yuan. Last month my performance created a value of 31,800 yuan, which is actually at my lowest level, and I got a cut of 25 percent of that money, which is about 8,000 yuan. Apart from that, I was given 750 yuan of food expenses, a 1200 yuan performance bonus, as well as 200 yuan of express delivery fee. Sometimes I work overtime like crazy and frequently stay up all night, and by doing that I created value of 40,000 to 50,000 yuan and got 15,000 yuan of monthly salary. '

'Born in 1994, I'm an e-commercer with a monthly salary of about 20,000 yuan. Many people around me have bought their own car, found their life partners and got married. I've found a nice girl, too. I hope everyone could get better and better.'

'I am a girl, born in 1995. Started my own business three years ago, I've bought my own car and a commercial house in downtown. Now I travel around the country with a monthly salary of over 10,000 yuan. I'm planning to open an inn in Fenghuang and settle down there. I couldn't imagine how much hardship I've gone through to get the life I live now. '

'I was born in 1995 with a monthly salary of 5,000. It is a miracle that I survived.'

'Born in 1996, I dived into this world in 2010 with nothing at the beginning and went through ups and downs. I'm in my second venture now, not earning so much money, that is about 100,000 a year, and I'm feeling tired. But I've become more satisfied. Having been living in Shanghai for more than 3 years, I've tasted the bitterness and sweetness of life. Now I just feel grateful for my life and all I've been through.'

'Born in 1993, I've doing sales work for 3 years with a monthly salary of nearly 10,000 yuan. I do not spend too much and nor do I save any money.'

How much money is enough?

Considering the imbalance of China's economic development, the income level of different regions also vary a lot. Ten thousand yuan could be a big sum of money, or it could run out very quickly. In big cities like Beijing and Shanghai, 10,000 yuan may not be enough to lead a high-quality life at all. In a small county, one can live comfortably with 10,000 yuan.

So the question is, would you prefer to earn 10,000 yuan in a big city but live a relatively hard life, or would you like to earn thousands of yuan and live a comfortable life in a small city?
