五、正己 Rectifying One's Word, Deed and Thought 第一百一十八则(Rule 118） 【文言】(Classical Chinese) 景公問晏子日：「君子常行曷若？」 晏子對曰：「衣冠不中，不敢以入朝；所言不義，不敢以要君；身行不順，治事不公，不敢以蒞眾。衣冠無不中，故朝無奇僻之服；所言無不義，故下無偽上之報；身行順，治事公，故國無阿黨之義。三者，君子之常行也。」 （卷三十三 晏子） 景公问晏子日：「君子常行曷若？」 晏子对曰：「衣冠不中，不敢以入朝；所言不义，不敢以要君；身行不顺，治事不公，不敢以莅众。衣冠无不中，故朝无奇僻之服；所言无不义，故下无伪上之报；身行顺，治事公，故国无阿党之义。三者，君子之常行也。」 （卷三十三 晏子） 【白话】(Vernacular Chinese) 景公问晏子说:「有才德的人平时的行为准则如何?」 晏子回答说:「如果穿戴不符合礼制,他们不敢谒见君王,如果所说的话不符合道义,他们不要求君王听从;品行如果不符合正道,或处理政事不公正,他们不敢管理百姓。因为穿戴符合礼制,所以在朝廷中没有官员穿奇装异服;因为所说的话符合道义,所以下级官员不会对上级官员施予欺骗的报复行为;因为他们的品行符合正道;此外,处理政事公正,所以诸侯国内不会发生结党营私的行为。这三方面就是有才德的人平时的行为准则。」 【英译】(Translation in English) Duke Jin said to Yan Zi, 'How about the gentlemen's ordinary criteria of behaving themselves?' Yan Zi said, 'If their wear disagrees with proprieties, they daren't request an audience with the ruler; in case their words discord wit the moral principle, they daren't request the ruler to take; on condition that their characters are discordant with the right principle or they administer government affairs partially, they daren't handle the common people. As their wear concurs with proprieties, there are no officials in grotesque garments at Court; because their words conform with the moral principle, the inferior officials won't inflict the retaliatory measures of deceit upon their superiors; since their personalities sychornize with the right principle; besides, they manage government affairs impartially, there are no deeds of setting up a coterie in pursuit of selfish interests in the feudal states.
