Mencius (372-289 BC), born in Zoucheng, Shandong, China, was a thinker and educator, and an exponent of Confucianism. His doings and sayings are recorded in the book Mencius. The Confucian thoughts of Confucius and Mencius are often collectively referred to as the Doctrines of Confucius and Mencius. There are well-known stories about Mencius’ mother who moved house three times before she found the right neighborhood -- next to a school -- to raise her son, and who cut half-woven cloth to tell her son that one cannot stop a task midway. Mencius’ mother is still a model of maternity in China today.
