Cai Lun (61-121), born in Leiyang, Hunan, China, was the inventor of papermaking, one of the four major Chinese inventions. He was a eunuch and used to write on pieces of silk and bamboo slips. He summarized the experience of predecessors and conceived the idea of making paper from bark of trees, hemp waste and fishnets. The invention of papermaking drastically changed the Chinese history and the world history. |
