At the main campus, the Khoo Teck Puat Gymnasium was packed twice in one day, as PKU held one Opening Ceremony for undergraduate students in the morning, and another for graduate students in the afternoon. The ceremonies began with a series of performances by PKU students and staff, then opened up into speeches delivered by student representatives and faculty members.

Hao Ping, President of Peking University, delivered the final speeches for both events, in which he had a lot to say to this year’s batch of fresh faces, teaching them of Peking University’s long, storied history, and how these new students are being entrusted to carry on that legacy, contribute great things to China’s development, and foster a global perspective through intercultural communication.

China has become the second largest economy and been taking a leading role globally as never before. Meanwhile, the world economy and global governance is facing challenges. In times like this, how to understand the relations between China and the world, and how to promote coexistence of world civilizations are the questions that each student needs to think about.

This year’s class also welcomed:

28 students from Taiwan/HK/Macao, and

64 international students from countries like Japan, South Korea, Nepal, Zambia, Canada, and the US.

On the topic of international students, the PKU Shenzhen Graduate School welcomed a record number of international students in 2019.

This year, 132 students coming from 44 different countries chose Peking University Shenzhen Graduate School (PKUSZ) to continue their education. These students, who hail from a diverse set of countries including Norway, New Zealand, Argentina, and Russia, have been incredibly busy with orientation activities over the last couple weeks. PKU Shenzhen spared no efforts in keeping its new students engaged, offering a variety of activities such as shopping trips, app workshops, and museum visits.
