Last week, thousands of Peking University’s new students celebrated the start of their first semester, as the main campus, the Shenzhen Graduate School, and the Health Science Center held opening ceremonies respectively. Peking University's main campus Peking University Shenzhen Graduate School Peking University Health Science Center At the main campus, the Khoo Teck Puat Gymnasium was packed twice in one day, as PKU held one Opening Ceremony for undergraduate students in the morning, and another for graduate students in the afternoon. The ceremonies began with a series of performances by PKU students and staff, then opened up into speeches delivered by student representatives and faculty members. Hao Ping, President of Peking University, delivered the final speeches for both events, in which he had a lot to say to this year’s batch of fresh faces, teaching them of Peking University’s long, storied history, and how these new students are being entrusted to carry on that legacy, contribute great things to China’s development, and foster a global perspective through intercultural communication. China has become the second largest economy and been taking a leading role globally as never before. Meanwhile, the world economy and global governance is facing challenges. In times like this, how to understand the relations between China and the world, and how to promote coexistence of world civilizations are the questions that each student needs to think about. - Hao Ping, 2019 PKU Opening Ceremony Other speakers for the morning ceremony included Gao Yuanning, Dean of the School of Physics, and Ding Xuning, student representative for this year’s undergrads. Speakers at the afternoon ceremony included Yang Li, Vice Dean of the Peking University First Hospital. and Zhang Haochen, student representative for this year’s graduate students. This year, the PKU Health Science Center welcomed: 845 new undergraduate students, 805 new graduate students, and 666 new doctorate students. Clinical medicine, foundational medicine, and pharmacology have proven to be popular disciplines this year, with those three disciplines alone accounting for more than half of the new undergraduate students. This year’s class also welcomed: 28 students from Taiwan/HK/Macao, and 64 international students from countries like Japan, South Korea, Nepal, Zambia, Canada, and the US. ![]() On the topic of international students, the PKU Shenzhen Graduate School welcomed a record number of international students in 2019. ![]() This year, 132 students coming from 44 different countries chose Peking University Shenzhen Graduate School (PKUSZ) to continue their education. These students, who hail from a diverse set of countries including Norway, New Zealand, Argentina, and Russia, have been incredibly busy with orientation activities over the last couple weeks.
