China in My Eyes

In 2017, I left my family, friends and everything there in India and entered to the new step of my life - To go to China for further studies.

01

When I asked for suggestions from my family and other relatives, everyone suggested to select China. I was wondered and asked why you are suggesting the same place? Why can’t you suggest some other countries like Russia, Georgia or others? The reply from everyone was the same:“because the expenses there are much cheaper than India or all other countries.” This is the main concept of most Indians about China. Everything available in China is cheaper than all over the world.

What I knew about Chinese food habits was that Chinese eat raw meat and insects. I saw some trending Chinese videos and I understood that food is a main challenge I’m going to face when I reach there. My friends were teasing me by saying that “after when he come back from China, he won’t eat any Indian foods. We must find some ways to grow some insects for him”. Hearing all these from everyone, in my concept China were the worst country in the world. My interest to come to China was decreasing day by day.

I got admission in North Sichuan Medical College. Deep from my mind, I was not ready to come here. But only to fulfill my dream, I came here.

02

2017 November 09, from Kochi international airport we started our journey. It was a long trip connecting Sri Lanka and Thailand. On the next day we arrived at Chengdu Shuangliu International Airport. Upon the arrival in airport, I realized that food is not the main problem I’m going to face here. Language - we struggled a lot to find a taxi, no one were able to speak English. With the help of a translator we got a taxi to Nanchong. I started noticing that do every Chinese looks the same or not!

On the same day, I went to take a new mobile SIM card there I got my first Chinese friend; she is a staff in that store. She was the first person I met in China who speaks English. In a short time we became close. After that me and my classmates went outside to eat food. On the way to street I was noticing the faces of Chinese. I assured that all Chinese don’t look the same!

03

After 2 days off, on Monday I started my new college life there with new friends, new environment and all. All our teachers are well qualified and well educated. Most of them have done their master degree in foreign countries. We also have some foreign teachers. I think we have everything best in our college like classes, infrastructure, teachers and everything. Simply they provide us the best environment for our study purposes. I also feel our college like a college in our home country, all the festivals and celebrations we can do in our college and our teachers will also support those.

I met a lot of Chinese people in my daily life. What I found is everyone is busy with their own life. No one is going to interfere in any of our matters. We feel so free and safe in China. At any time, we can go anywhere, without any fear. The way Chinese follow their laws, rules and regulations are really appreciable. I saw women working in every area. I think China is full of opportunities.

I’ve got many Chinese friends. We used to go out to play. I started learning Chinese language from them. I found that Chinese people are really nice and kind hearted. If you are in some bad situation Chinese people will really help us.

About the technology, it is well advanced and simple. For an example just a mobile phone is enough for us. We don’t need to carry any money with us; we can just use WeChat or Alipay for our payment processes and all. Transportation and lifestyle are simple and more convenient. Even though everything is simple and easy here, people won’t sit here lazy. They find their own time for health and do exercise. I understood that this is why Chinese people look young.

Day by day I started loving China. After a semester I called my parents and told them “if you were also here with me, I won’t go back to India again”. I start realizing that “China is not what I expected”.

04

When I went back to India, I showed my photos and videos to my friends. They were really excited. I showed them that all their concepts about China were absolutely wrong.

What I came to know is the social media is only sharing some bad sides of China to India and India to China. When I came here, I came to know that about India also Chinese people have very bad impression. Once when I asked one of my friends have you ever been in India, she replied: No, I’m afraid to go to India, because I saw a video. Only thing I want to say is that “Just one or two videos can’t explain the whole country.”

Actually, I don’t know how fast the two years has passed. Still I’m remembering the first day I came here. Feels like everything passed yesterday. From the past two years, I understood that all my concepts about China were wrong. In every aspect, China is entirely different.

Since I am an Indian, I tried to compare India and China with a lot of things. Actually, it was a dream to see this giant country and understand its culture. I believe that this is a Golden opportunity to get a chance to live in China as an International student.
