China Mobile Payments, AI, Bike-Sharing, Short Videos All Make The Meeker Report. China tech is highlighted regularly in Mary Meeker's annual Internet report that underscores China's advances in mobile entertainment and payments, e-commerce, artificial intelligence and on-demand transportation -- in other words, all the latest trends that define Chinese innovation today. If you want evidence of China's climb, consider that nine of the world's top 20 Internet leaders ranked by market valuation are in China today: Alibaba, Tencent, Ant Financial, Baidu, Xiaomi, Didi Chuxing, JD.com, Meituan-Dianping and Toutiao. The remaining 11 are in the U.S. led by Apple, Amazon, Microsoft, Google (Alphabet) and Facebook. China's momentum in artificial intelligence is also highlighted with notes on Chinese government support for AI development. The report cites Eric Schmidt's prediction that China could be at the level of the U.S. within five years, considering how fast Chinese AI knowhow is improving. The growth in mobile entertainment gets a lot of attention in the report. China's mobile Internet users increased by 8 percent last year to 753 million users, and with it, time spent on all forms of online entertainment but particularly so for short-form video, up 22 percent year over year. The two leaders are two Chinese startups: AI augmented mobile video creation Douyin (Tik-Tok) and location-based mobile discovery Kuaishou. In e-commerce, similar momentum is highlighted: China has the world's highest penetration of e-commerce (20 percent) and fast growth (28 percent). Alibaba's new retail initiative to upgrade offline retail in China (which still accounts for more than two-thirds of shopping) and its recently introduced highly digitalized Hema supermarkets are covered in depth. An interesting chart does a deep dive comparison of Alibaba and Amazon in retailing, showing a wide span of similar services though Amazon is far larger. Related to that, the report delves into triple-digit increases for mobile payment led by WeChat Pay and Alipay in addition to a 29 percent in online advertising. Several of the trends spotlighted in the e-commerce section reflect that the U.S. is still in the early stages of retail adoption, but are already becoming mainstream in China. 难点注释: 1.
