约翰霍普金斯大学简称JHU,有着全球最顶级的医学院,其BME(Biomedical Engineering 生物医药工程)专业更是位列全美榜首。

Johns Hopkins University (JHU) has the world's top medical school, and its BME (Biomedical Engineering) major is ranked the first in the United States. The program, which has a global enrollment limit of 120 students a year, has an acceptance rate as low as 2%, making it harder to get in than schools like Harvard, Yale and Princeton. When applying for the BME program, the student's application endures three rounds of scrutiny, and approval from all three admissions bodies, including JHU itself and the BME school.

Q1

WHY

Biomedical Engineering?

I first became interested in biology when I was in middle school, right after I watched the blockbusters Resident Evil and Avatar. I was astonished by the influence of biological viruses in Resident Evil and how animals in Avatar could be controlled by the human mind simply through telepathic cellular signaling. I wondered if all these were really possible in the real world. Therefore, such curiosity triggered me to search for more answers in the world of biology. Gradually, the more I learned about biology, the more intrigued I became. I found that all living organisms are amazingly interwoven with one another, as each plays a unique role in the grand ecosystem.

Biomedical engineering is an interdisciplinary subject that incorporates biology, medicine and engineering. Equipped with various bio-tech theories and techniques, the application of biomedical engineering can benefit human life in a wide array of aspects. Take, for example, 3D printing. It is amazing that today’s 3D printing technology can be used to transplant human organs and even modify genetic materials in order to remove pathogenic genes. It has become evident that biomedical engineering can play a crucial role in the diagnosis, treatment and prediction of diseases, all of which, I believe, are incredibly important for human health. And this is the reason why I resolutely opted for BME as my major.

Q2

 WHY

Johns Hopkins University?

I've been preparing for university applications since Grade 10, and made a list of universities which were offering my dream major, BME. At the top of that list was a school I had never heard of: Johns Hopkins University. I wondered what made this not so well known university to be at the top of the list. Curiously, I immediately started to search for more information about this university. Suffice to say, I was really amazed by what I found out! It turned out that there have been 37 Nobel prize-winning professors in Johns Hopkins. And for students doing independent research, the university provides them with ample funding and opportunities to participate in various research projects. Further, the fact that it is located in the suburban area of east US is also conducive to a nice and quiet learning environment for me. Apart from all that, what interested me the most was the  combined Bachelor & Master Program in this top ranking university of public health, which allows its postgraduate students to directly proceed into a Master degree in Global Health Studies, as long as they have attained target GPA and enough experience in social voluntary work and academic research. Pertinent areas of the study may involve global disease epidemiology, health systems, nutrition, and social & behavioral interventions, etc.

Q3

 WHAT did I do?

During my high school years at SUIS Wanyuan, I was fortunate to attend many biology-themed field trips and social activities. In a summer vacation of Grade 9, I participated in a scientific expedition at the natural reserve of Baima Snow Mountain in Yunnan province, where we were to observe and determine the influence of tourism development on the local primate animals. The research target I chose was Yunnan snub-nosed monkey. For several days, I observed the behavior of the monkeys and studied the effects of human feeding on their unilateral behavior, which refers to their inclination to use one preferred hand over the other in their daily life. Research suggests that the unilateral behavior of primates is not only related to their brain development, but also to their surrounding atmosphere. And studying the changes in unilateral behavior in Yunnan snub-nosed monkey is therefore an effective way to understand the influence of human activities on nature. As for the result of this study, we found out that activities such as human chatter, camera flashes and the act of feeding can all affect and change the monkeys’ unilateral behavior, and even make them more irritable.

Having done this research, I gained a more profound understanding of the connection between man and nature. As many know, Yunnan snub-nosed monkey is an endangered species in China. And the initial purpose of establishing the natural reserve is to protect these monkeys from outside threats. Nevertheless, the constant expansion of tourism and human’s lack of knowledge in animal protection are now proving to be harshly detrimental to these endangered species. This experience made me realize that we still have a lot to do and to learn in terms of protecting the animals, the environment and the earth. This is also why I became really determined to study more about biology.

Since Grade 10, I have joined the school’s community service group. Led by teachers, I routinely visited a local pediatric hospital as a volunteer, to provide love and care to children who were suffering from diseases. I tried to do handicraft with them, share happy stories with them, or give them consolation when they felt scared. It was also quite heartwarming to see them happy in my company. And when I was in a bad mood, I would be completely uplifted again after they folded lovely paper roses for me or simply played games with me. It was in those moments that I secretly made up my mind to study biological medicine as my vocation, so that hopefully one day, the smile on those children’s face will no longer be obscured by of the mask of disease.

Lastly, I would like express my deepest gratitude to SUIS for giving me so many opportunities to explore my interests and my potential. I’d also like to thank all the people who had cared for and supported me. And I am really thrilled to have finally been admitted to Johns Hopkins University's biomedical engineering program and subsequently the Global Health Studies. Though the university application season can be a tough time, the results are inspiring after good efforts. I always believe that the beauty of the spring depends on how you spend the winter. I genuinely hope that every student can eventually see the blossom of their own spring flowers!
