SubsurfaceFreshwaterAbstractionandSaltwaterIntrusion ProtectioninanIsland GuominLi InstituteofGeologyandGeophysics,ChinaAcademyofSciences AbstractUndernaturalconditionsintheaquifersystemofanisland,astateofequilibriumis maintained,withastationaryfreshwater-seawatertransitionzoneandalotofrainfallthatenters theflowsystemremainsintheupperaquifers,moveslaterally,anddischargestothesurrounding saltwaterbody.Thereexistsarelationshipbetweentherateoffreshwaterdischargetotheseaand theextentofseawaterintrusion.Underthedisturbedconditions,thefreshwaterdischargestothe seaisthedifferencebetweentherateofnaturalandartificialdischargeandthatofpumping.Two phenomenacanleadtoadeteriorationofthefreshwaterresources:thelateraladvanceofthe saltwaterfronttowardsthecostalwellsandtheupcomingofunderlyingsaltwateralloverthe island.Itisclearthatthemaximumallowablerateoffreshwaterabstractionisafunctionofthe sitting,screening,andpumpingratesofthewells.Analysisanddiscussesarecarriedoutwiththe objectivesofunderstandingthemechanismofsaltwaterintrusionandlearningtocontrolitin ordertoimprovetheyieldoftheaquifersysteminanisland.Anexampleisexaminedforthe managementofthefreshwaterlensofWeizhouIsland,China.
