“动词 of”常见搭配

admit of 容许有,有……的余地,有……的可能

The matter admits of no delay. 此事刻不容缓。

The price quoted will not admit of any allowance. 所报价格不容打折扣。

The word admits of no other meaning in the case. 该词在此例中不可能有其他的意义。

allow of 容许,许可

The situation allows of no delay. 形势不容拖延。

The facts allow of only one explanation. 这些事实只能有一种解释。

approve of 赞成,支持

We came away with the feeling that they didn’t really approve of us. 我们离开时感到他们并不是真的赞同我们。

If Freud were alive today, he would approve of our methods. 假使弗洛伊德今天还活着,他会赞成我们的方法。

boast of 得意夸耀

He boasts of having got a perfect score on the exam. 他因考试得满分而洋洋得意。

dream of 梦见,梦想

He sometimes dreams of home. 他有时梦见自己的故乡。

I often dreamed of becoming a statesman. 我时常梦想成为一位政治家。

hear of 听说,得知;允许,考虑

I’ve never heard of anyone doing a thing like that. 我从未听人说过会有人做那种事。

She just won’t hear of such an idea. 她完全不同意这样一个想法。

【注】表示“允许”“考虑”时,主要用于否定句,且通常与 won’t 等连用。

know of 听说过,知道有

I don’t know the writer, but I know of him. 我不认识这个作家,但我听说过他。

Do you know of any way to get wine stains out of cloth? 你知道有什么方法可以把衣服上的酒渍去掉吗?

smell of ……的气味(www.)

The room smells of paint. 这房间有股油漆味。

This perfume smells of roses. 这香水散发出玫瑰的香气。

The kitchen smelled sweetly of herbs and fruit. 厨房里有芳草和水果的香气。

think of 想起,记起;考虑,想;想出;为……着想;认为,看待

I can’t think of his name at the moment. 我一时想不起他的名字。

We mustn’t just think of ourselves. 我们不能只考虑自己。

We must think of a way out of this. 我们必须想出一个解决此事的办法。

I think of him as a good teacher. 我认为他是个好老师。

tire of 对……厌倦

I never tire of this view. 这景色我永远看不厌。

He never tires of talking about his pretty daughter. 他谈起他那漂亮的女儿,从不会厌倦。

accuse … of 控告……做某事;因……而指责

The police accused him of theft. 警察控告他偷盗。

He accused me of having neglected my duty. 他指责我玩忽职守。
