图解Other、Others和Another

橙色头发的女孩叫Tina，她是这样介绍的这张照片：

This is me.

The other child is my brother.

The others are my parents.

随后，她指了指相簿，说：

My brother is also in another picture.

在Tina的介绍中，她使用到了other、others和another这三个词。那这三个词到底有什么区别呢？

other的语义是“其它”,用于表示前文中所述事物属于一类的“其它”事物。

前面例子中的“This is me.”，表示“这个小孩是我”。

而“The other child is my brother.”中使用了other来呼应前一句话，表示我这句话所谈的另外一个小孩.

我们再仔细观察other、others和another这三个词，不难发现它们实际上都与other这个词有关。如下所示：

如果用名词apple来与other作对比，就能一眼看出它们之间的区别了：

那么，the apple、an apple、apples的区别是什么？

这个问题很容易回答，the apple表示一个特定的苹果，而an apple表示任意一个苹果、apples表示的是多个苹果。

而the other和another、others的区别又是什么呢？

同理，the other表示一个特定的“其它”对象，而another表示任意一个“其它”对象、others表示多个“其它”对象。

1. the other的用法  

既然the other表示一个特定的“其它”对象，下面这个例子是正确的吗？

There are three kids in the room.

One is Jerry, the other is Mary. （×）

不正确。因为除了Tom外还有两个小孩，读者无从知晓其中的哪一个小孩叫Mary，这里就不能用the other来表示特指。

因为the other一般表示的是两者中的另外一个，如下图所示：

下面这个例子就是正确的：

He has a book in one hand, and a pen in the other.

因为人只有两只手，不会存在指向不明确的情况。

2. another的用法   

把another拆开来就是“an other”，表示的是任意一个“其它”的对象。

因此，another表示的是多个对象中的任意一个，如下图所示：

我们可以对前面的例子做一点小小的调整：

There are three kids in the room.

One is Jerry, another is Mary.（√）

将the other改为了another，这个句子就是正确的了。

各位可以从以下示例仔细体会一下the other和another间的区别：

There are four pencils on the desk. 

One is red, another is yellow, another is blue, the other is green.

3. others的用法   

既然others表示任意的多个“其它”对象，如果我们把others和another相比较，不难画出下图：

举一个例子：

There are lots of students in the room. 

Some are Australians, others are Mexicans.

上句表示的就是“房间里有很多的孩子，一些是澳大利亚人，一些是墨西哥人。”

其中隐含的意思是：还有一部分孩子是其它国籍的。

接下来再说说the others的用法。

因为the others前面有一个the，不难知道，它表示多个特定的“其它”对象，如下图所示：

因此，Tina在文章开头是这样描述照片的：

This is me.

The other child is my brother.

The others are my parents.

因为照片中总共有四个人，除去了“Tina”和“哥哥”，剩下的两个人就是他们的父母。

所以，她选择用the others来指代她的父母。
