Double Dancing on Dun huang Mural

涂志伟将中国历史上最光辉灿烂的文化历史、经过他多年的研究,创作成巨幅油画。他曾经到中国各地考察出土文物,研究文明的历史,1978 年到湖北隋县参观刚出土的大型编钟;

Zhiwei Tu is an international distinguished, highly awarded artist.

Zhiwei Tu has brought the great-the most glorious ages in Chinese culture and history-into the 21st century thought his dynamic canvases based on his many years of research. He spent a lot of his time in visiting many places to study the cultures of Chinese history. In 1978 he went to Sui County in Hebei Province of China to see the Bells which is the largest-size and richest-sound music instrument in the World and was just discovered a few days before he arrived. He also spent many months in the Dun Huang Caves in Northwest China doing detailed drawings and color studies of the murals. Research also took him to numerous museum collections. Since that time,

he has begun to create many breathtaking murals to show in this new century. The cave murals display the vitality of the half-nude dancers and musicians in the lavishsurrounding in which they performed. Tu has given a full three-dimensional interpretation with richness of color and depth of value. We can see from these paintings: “Dancing While Playing

Pipa”, “ Dance and Music of Dun Huang”, “Dance and Music in Tang Dynasty”, “Expansiveness and Harmony” and “Peaceful Life Marked by Dance and Music”, Dancers’ costumes, in a semisheer fabric, adorn exceptionally beautiful performers with classical designs, each augmented

by a large, perfect hibiscus or rose in full bloom. The various delicate postures of the body and gesture of hands in hand dancing are indeed remarkable as shown in the beautiful figures. In the painting titled “ Dance and Music in Tang Dynasty” again the meticulous, detailed research by

the artist invites the viewer back to the historical period with understanding of figures performing dancing while playing the pipa, while provided with drum rhythms. Figures in left and right side of the painting involve gossamer space. The bells in the left background are also providing accompaniment.

The keynote of each painting is the intense humanity of the artist. As the viewer senses the artist’s great humanity, that the paintings bring forth, it allows us to become one with the subject, place and time thus the true greatness and genius of the artist. He has reached our soul, our inner spirit.

Ruth Dyke Challacombe

President of Oil Painters of America (2000-2002)

Looking at Tu’s historical paintings, the audience is affected by the composition and the atmosphere he has created. His ability is admirable. In the “Seven-Step Poem”, he delineates the subtle relationship and complicated mood of Cao Pi and Cao Zhi. In “Dancing with his Aword”, he fully transmits the sadness of his tragedy. Wang Zhaojun and princess Wen-Cheng, two girls married off to the rulers of monority tribes by the Han court in order to relieve the threats from the tribes. Under Tu’s hands, their love and sorrow are vividly expressed by his delicate strokes and subtle coloring. Tu made the figures so real on the canvas. To achieve his, apainter not only has to have good composition, but also good lighting and coloring that decide the cold or warm hue of a painting. Such skills are rarely seen in Chinese realistic painters. Tu’s accomplishment is based on many year of training. He found solutions for each difficult technique and is finally able to shape the lively characters so the audience can actually feel the space of the background.

Though working hard on improving skills, Tu never ceases contemplating how to absorb the nutrition from the traditional Chinese Imagist painting and apply it to oil painting, making oil painting more imagist in style by means of brushstrokes.

Tu has special attachment to the Dunhuang Cave Art. He went there in 1980 and studied the mural paintings. He was especially impressed by the No. 112 Mogao Cave, a painting titled “The Western Aradise of Amitabha”. His “dancing While Playing Pipa” and “Music and Dance in Tang Dynasty”, the grandiose of the dancing scenes in the Tang Court, all came from his studies in Dunhuang.

Tu’s achievement is widely recognized in the U.S., he has been awarded many art prizes and was elected as president of the Oil Painters of America in 2004. He is talented and diligent, and he has committed himself to absorbing Western art and Eastern art. No matter whether they are cheerful or tragic themes, through his integration of Eastern and Western culture, Tu’s paintings are transmitting his humanistic concerns and mercy. While admiring his art, we are inspired by his thoughts and his philosophy of life as well.

Shao Dazhen, Professor of the Central Academy of Fine Arts

Few reach the level of professionalism that Zhiwei Tu has achieved. His ability to create the human form with such emotion that his portraits come alive evoking the illusion of a living, breathing person such as a beautiful woman playing a musical instrument or making a graceful gesture with hands so real they appear to be in motion.

The weather face of an outdoorsman or the beautiful little face of a child glowing with the light allowing the viewer to reminisce family and friends and just good art. When a story can be told without the verbal use of wards, when silence can be changed to song thru the use of a well directed brush stroke, this is the great talent of master painter of Zhiwei Tu. Light and color are essential to any painting. Zhiwei Tu has mastered the ability to create the illusion of light so beautifully that it leaves the viewer breathless in viewing his masterful work.

When I visited Tu and his wife Danni last year, I had the privilege of seeing many mural size historic masterpieces of art done by this great artist as a legacy to his culture as well as to the entire art world. I have never seen art more moving or more beautiful. The subjects vary from beautiful dancers with glowing fabric draped on their perfectly shaped bodies as they entertain royalty of the day, to the stories being told on canvas of ancient Chinese history. Every story is beautifully told in complete detail. These master works are a true legacy of the great painter Zhiwei Tu.
