Tipping is very common in many places inBritain. For example, it’s common to tip in restaurants, taxis and hotels! People often give 10 to 15 percent of the final bill as a tip. Sometimes the tip is added to the bill. Other times, you leave the money after having paid.

A foreign friend of mine told me that the most difficult Korean habit to break was bowing. Sure. InKorea, bowing means saying hello and goodbye, and how can you live a day without doing so?

Here’s a quick introduction about how and when to bow.

General Guidelines (方针)

Bows are generally reserved (保留) as greetings of respect to one’s seniors. You will hardly see close friends bowing to each other.

Posture (姿势)

Posture is important, even while bowing. Bowing occurs from the waist (腰), and not the neck. One should bow by bending forward his or her upper body from the waist, standing straight with knees (膝盖) closed.

It is polite to return the bow if you are receiving one, unless you’re a senior. Although you’re not required to bow when a child bows to you, it is nice to do so.

Exchange of business cards is common inKorea, and you’ll find yourself in situations when you’ll be exchanging cards and bowing at the same time.

Shake Hands

It’s becoming more and more common to shake hands in business settings. This too, is done while bowing. Korean women generally don’t shake hands first, even in business situations. There are some women who even find it impolite when a man shakes hands with them, so please pay attention to it.
