4. 表示独一无二的名词

表示世上独一无二事物的名词前必须用定冠词，常见的如：the sun太阳，the earth地球，the moon月亮。

比如：

It was a fine day. The sun was shining brightly.

天气晴朗。阳光灿烂。

We can live on the earth because there is air around it.

我们可以在地球上生存，因为一球四周有空气。

5.表示方位

表示方位的名词前，通常用定冠词，常见的如：the east东方，the west西文，the north北方，the south南方，the left左边。

The sun rises in the east and sets in the west.

太阳在东方升起，西文落下。

The wind was blowing from the north.

风从北方吹来。

The bank is on the left. You can’t miss it.

银行在左边。你不会找不到的。

但是，在方位词构成的平行结构中习惯上不用冠词。

比如：

The earth turns from west to east.

地球自西向东转。

The river runs through the country from north to south.

这条河自北向南流过这个国家。
