It was the first new state in 47 years. The 48th state was Arizona, which became a state in 1912. Alaska is the largest of all the 50 states. It is more than twice the size of Texas, which is the second largest state. Because much of the state is still unsettled, Alaska has fewer people than any other state. This is why Alaska is called “The Last Frontier (最后的边疆).” In northern and western Alaska, the Eskimos still live the way they always have. Alaska was bought from Russia in 1867 for $7,200,000, or about 2￠ per acre. At the time Alaska was purchased from Russia, many Americans had never heard of it. They thought buying Alaska was a mistake. They thought it was just a wasteland, a land of ice and snow. We now know this is not true. Alaska is rich in fish, wood, gold, oil, and natural gas. Alaska has paid for itself many times over. Alaska and Hawaii are the only two states that are not part of the land that contains the other 48 states. There are about 500 miles of Canadian land that separate Alaska from the state of Washington. Alaska is closer to Russia than it is to any of the states. It is only 51 miles from Russia. The capital of Alaska is Juneau, and the largest city is Anchorage. Mount McKinley, the highest mountain in North America, is located in Alaska. It was named for William McKinley, the 25th President of the United States. Today, Alaska is an important source of oil. In 1968, the largest oil field in North America was discovered. A pipeline 800 miles long carries oil across Alaska.
