The Mexican War

On February 2, 1848, the United Sates and Mexico ended a two-year war. The U.S. victory over Mexico added more than 500,000 square miles of land to the United States.

The Mexican War began in 1846 because of a dispute over the western boundary of Texas(得克萨斯州). The U.S. claimed it was at the Rio Grande, and Mexico insisted it was 100 miles to the east at the Nueces River.

At this time in history, Mexico owned all of the land that is now Arizona, Nevada, Utah, New Mexico, and California. For many years, the United States had been wanting to acquire this land. Many people felt that the Pacific Ocean was the natural western boundary of the United States.

When the Mexican War started, President James Polk declared that not only the Texas land, but the entire Mexican territory, should be taken by the U.S. The war spread from along the Rio Grande to California, New Mexico, and into Mexico itself. Although the Mexican troops(军队) fought bravely and hard, they were no match for the better-equipped American soldiers. The Americans won every single battle of the war.

A treaty ending the war was signed in the city of Guadalupe Hidalgo, Mexico, on February 2, 1848. The United States had won all the land in Texas. The U.S. also took possession of the Mexican territory, for which it paid Mexico $15 million.
