On February 3, 1959, a charter plane traveling from Mason City, Iowa, to Fargo, North Dakota, took off in a light snowstorm and crashed on farmland just 10 miles away. Killed in the crash(坠毁) was Buddy Holly, a rising star in the music world of rock and roll. He was only 22 years old.

Charles Hardin Holly, called Buddy all his life, was born in Lubbock, Texas, on September 7, 1936. Raised in a musical family, Buddy had early dreams of becoming famous. As a teenager, he played his guitar and sang country music songs at public Events.

In 1955, Elvis Presley came to Lubbock for a performance. Buddy was so impressed by Elvis’ style, that he decided to become a rock and roll musician. He and three friends formed a group and called themselves the Crickets(“蟋蟀”). Buddy composed3 many of the songs he sang. 

The Crickets went on tours. Sales of their records soared. Buddy earned a gold record for his song, “Peggy Sue.” 

In 1958, Buddy met and married Maria Elena Santiago.They decided to live in New York where Buddy felt there were better opportunities to build his career. The Crickets broke up then because two of the members did not want to leave Texas. 

Buddy was on a Midwest tour when the plane crash occurred. Almost 50 years after his death, rock and roll fans still idolize Buddy Holly. He is a charter member of the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame(摇滚名人堂) that opened in 1995.
