 Winslow Homer was a famous American artist. He was born in Boston, Massachusetts, on February 24, 1836. As a young man, he was a student of art at the National Academy of Design in New York. When Homer was 25, he became an illustrator for a magazine called Harper’s Weekly. He went to the front lines during the Civil War to draw pictures of the war for Harper’s. While covering the war, Homer began to paint scenes of army life. When he returned to New York, he exhibited his first important work, a painting titled Prisoner from the Front. This painting won Homer national recognition as an accomplished artist. Homer went to Europe for a few years and studied art in Paris, France. When he returned to the United States, he made his home in Maine. That is when Homer began his notable career as the leading American painter of ocean scenes, fishermen, and the wilderness of northern New England. His paintings are described as “dramatic and realistic in the highest degree.” Some of his best-known paintings are The Life Line, The Fog Warning, Undertow, The West Wind, and The Maine Coast. Homer’s paintings now hang in art museums in Philadelphia, New York, Boston, Providence, and Paris. He was elected a member of the American Academy of Arts and Letters(美国艺术文学院) in 1905.
